中国画学院恪守教学大纲，在"传统为本、兼容并蓄、教学相长、鼓励创造"和"三位一体"的教学原则下，以传统绘画基础、书法基础、写生基础、文史基础为主导。以传统出新、中西融合两种教学思路与方案，坚持从传统到现代、从生活到艺术、从基本功到创造性这三个基本环节，形成了"传统、生活、创作三位一体"和"临摹、写生、创作紧密结合"的教学特色，培养了大批热爱祖国，以学养、才识、人格、创造为一体的能适应社会多方面需要的中国画专门人才。
西安美院的国画专业
西安美院国画系建系于1957年。建系几十年来，先后有长安画派的著名画家赵望云、石鲁、何海霞、康师尧等在我系兼课，为国画系的学术发展起到巨大的推动作用。有冯友石、邱石冥、陈瑶生、叶访樵、郑乃珖、张义潜、罗铭、刘文西、陈忠志、陈光健、孙宜生、赵文发、彭蠡、李超、肖焕、张三友、徐义生、江文湛、张之光、张立柱等一批中国画名家在我系任教，为我系的学术发展作出过巨大的贡献。目前，以刘文西、杨晓阳为学术带头人的国画系凝聚了一批在当今中国画坛成绩斐然的新一代专家教授为师资队伍，可以说实力雄厚。
在学术上，国画系以长安画派为传统，以黄土画派为旗帜，致力于传统中国画的现代性研究。在教学上致力于高素质的新型中国画人才培养，为新时代作出应有的贡献。
在教学管理上，系主任姜怡翔顺应改革的潮流，大胆地创立了教学工作室的建制。国画系现有三个工作室：
刘文西工作室：工作室主任张小琴、刘丹。以人物为主的综合性专业。
刘永杰工作室：工作室主任刘永杰。以中国人物画为主的综合性专业。
陈国勇山水画工作室：工作室主任陈国勇。以中国山水画为专业。
国画系目前在教层次结构齐全，面向社会招收本科生、硕士研究生、博士研究生。
国画系教师共43人，其中教授6人，副教授21人。
几十年来国画系培养了许多中国画名家，其中有许多现为中国画坛顶尖人物，如美协副主席杨晓阳、深圳美协主席王子武、陕西国画院画家崔振宽、王有政、郭全忠等。近年来国画系教师参加全国性美术大展中获奖190余人次，省级200余次，出版个人作品集和专著70余部。
目前，国画系为省级重点学科，省级名牌专业，拥有国家级精品课程。
天津美院的国画专业：
中国画系是天津美术学院直属系,共设中国画和书法艺术两个专业方向。
中国画专业方向：
中国画专业方向注重传统文化与现代理念的融合，注重中国画教学，创作和理论的研究，以人物、花鸟、山水为研究方向，实行分科教学，继承传统文化精髓，面向时代，力求在发扬民族文化的基点上，以科学和艺术的发展观指导办学，培养从事中国画创作的专门人才。
主要课程包括：中国画概论（系列课程）；中国画专业基础课程，工笔人物画（人物画线描、重彩临摹、工笔重彩人物画写生）工笔人物画技法课程；水墨人物画技法，水墨人物画写生，技法分析（临摹）；花鸟画临摹写生，山水画技法（临摹、写生）中国画经典作品分析鉴赏，中国画创作，中国画基础、篆刻、书法等课程。
书法专业方向：
通过对一定的文史、国画、哲学、古文字学、字画鉴定、美学等方面知识的深入全面的学习、研究，培养对中国书法具有全新的认识，并具有一定美术基础的，有较高书法、篆刻创作能力的人才。
