随着嵌入植物体的外来基因的遗传在1984年被首次报道后，生物技术在以作物为基础的农业上爆发了。在此之前，科学家们就推测到通过利用在20世纪70年代所发现的重组DNA技术可以改良生物体，但那时还不具备把一个新的基因信息插入到基因组的能力。最初出版的以农业细菌为媒介的转移以及紧随其后的相关出版物激发了植物生物技术领域的新兴产业。显然，生物技术方兴未艾。许多公司受到生物技术具有可以改良作物之潜能的鼓惑，纷纷跳上了生物技术“大篷车”。正像所有的新兴产业的典型特征那样，它们（的发展）只能靠技术创新。生物技术起初的进展缓慢，导致（人们）对生物技术是否将会对农业生产产生主要影响信心不足。另一方面，当我们审视从第一个转基因植物的报道到第一批转基因西红柿商品的出现的这十年，其中的进步不可谓不快。从那时开始，许多的转基因植物被商业化种植。截止目前，所有的作物品种，包括很多园艺作物，已经转基因成功。以下我们将着重讨论可望冲击园艺产业的一些生物技术的近期发展。
成熟和老化
对许多重要的园艺品种而言，植物生长素乙烯在调节果实成熟和花朵老化方面起着重要作用。通过生物技术的途径来控制果实成熟和花朵的老化已经成为现实。乙烯是由S—腺苷甲硫氨酸（SAM）通过众所周知的生化途径合成。首先，SAM在ACC合成酶的作用下转化成1—环丙烷1-羧酸（ACC），最后，ACC在ACC氧化酶的作用下转化成乙烯。这两种酶都能够由大的基因家族进行编码，它们已经从许多植物品种中克隆出来。Oeller等人首次报道了通过调控这种途径来调节果实成熟。他描述了在西红柿果实发育期间，对ACC合成酶的一种抗体RNA的表达会导致ACC合成酶活性的急剧降低，从而延迟果实的成熟。通过利用外源乙烯气体，这一过程是完全可逆的。这些结果清楚地表明了通过基因工程可以调控成熟的速度。
花的颜色
花卉的消费者总是热衷于新奇的产品，花的颜色就成了生物技术的目标。在高等植物中花青素是最主要的色素。它们的生产涉及到生物化学和分子生物学，多数已经研究清楚。具备蓝色色素的花卉品种是一个主要的研究目标，因为在自然界不存在这些颜色的品种，比如玫瑰或康乃馨。飞燕草色素通常是形成蓝色素的花青素。最近，澳大利亚花卉基因小组成功地从矮牵牛花识别和克隆了类黄酮3，5-羟化酶，它是生物合成飞燕草色素所必需的。这就给生产花朵中含有蓝色素的转基因植物提供了所必需的重要信息。然而，这只是问题的一部分。除了花瓣细胞内花青素的存在外，花的颜色也受制于细胞内PH。细胞内PH是受许多基因控制的，这些基因目前还不为人知。因此，能够改变花朵颜色的转基因植物的发展还要取决于我们对细胞内PH控制的生物化学和分子生物学的研究。
