麦斯威尔是魔术师，原名叫威廉卡特，旅居于英国，他的表演很失败，所以他很穷。他负债累累，就去投靠了远在美国的亲戚，但他在美国的表演依然不成功，就去了美国旧金山投靠他哥，但火车半路出事故了。
威廉幸存了下来，但他打这以后就像变了个人，还称自己叫伟大的麦斯威尔在沙漠火车事故之后，威廉·卡特拥有了一本书，那本书成了他表演魔术的重要道具。
后来威廉·卡特一炮而红，成了美国西部小有名气的魔术师，为了维持名气，他工作量变大了，于是他想找一名助手来帮助他，接着来一个名叫“查理”的小女生来应聘了，接着成了麦斯威尔的女助手。
饥荒中的火药在科学那一栏，先要解锁炼金引擎，也就是二本科技，然后站在炼金引擎旁边，点开科学那一栏就可以看到火药的制作了，火药可以配合冰杖来打BOSS。
合成火药仅需要三种材料，分别为木炭、硝石和臭鸡蛋，并且这三种材料的获取方法也非常容易。首先是木炭，只需要找到任意一棵树，然后将其点燃，等待树木烧烬就可以获得了，硝石则需要玩家使用十字镐来开采特殊的矿石就可以获取。
臭鸡蛋的或许方式则有两种，可以建造一个鸟笼，然后使用捕鸟陷阱抓一只鸟，并将其放入鸟笼，之后在鸟笼旁喂食一个烤过的怪物肉，就可以获得一个鸡蛋，此事再将鸡蛋放入箱中几天，最终就能获得一个臭鸡蛋。
相较于这个方法，第二种则更加简单，玩家可以等待冬天过后，企鹅会跳入海中，我们就能直接在企鹅停留的冰面上拾取到臭鸡蛋。
获得三个材料后玩家就可以回到炼金引擎旁边合成火药，火药的实用范围很广，特别是用来当做击杀BOSS的武器非常好用，仅需15个火药就可以无伤打败龙蝇BOSS。
船炮获得的方法：
在船难DLC中火药还可以用来制作椰子炸弹和黑曜石椰子炸弹以及船炮。船炮必须放进船的插槽时才能使用。船难得世界里，火药的材料是不能再生的，还是可以通过其它方式得到。
可以用龙虾大餐向海盗章鱼换取船炮，用赌博机获得火药，或者去挖藏宝地。可以透过神舟飞船到基础游戏世界中的洞穴，在地震来临时获得再生的硝石。
那两个骨头下就是藏宝地，蛞蝓黏液也是一种爆炸物，每个能造成50的伤害，可以喂食蛞蝓龟和蜗牛龟获得，杀死它们也能获得，甲壳石墩也会掉落，触手怪有10%的几率会掉落，1个蛞蝓黏液可以恢复矿灯和矿工帽9.5%的耐久度。
