在制冷技术发展日新月异的今天，非共沸混合工质得到了很大的重视。特别是目前广泛替代
CFCs
制冷剂的情况下，因为非共沸混合工质可以克服纯质替代所
带来的缺点。一般使用非共沸混合工质的目的为：
1)
降低压比，使单级压缩获得更低的蒸发温度。
2)
增大制冷机的容量。
3)
实现非等温制冷，降低功耗，提高制冷系数。
4)
作为
CFCs
制冷剂的替代工质，以弥补使用纯质的不足。
一般情况下，少量的高沸点组分加入至低沸点组分（混合工质中含量较多的组分）中，所组成的混合工质可提高制
冷系数，因而增加了产生相同制冷量所需要
的功率，但由于吸入蒸气的比体积减小，制冷机的制冷量增加了，这样，相同的机器就获得更大的制冷量和较低的温度。
但是，典型的非共沸混合工质存在着的弱点，就是在制冷系统中不易控制其准确的成分。如对泄漏很敏感，系统泄
漏后将造成性能的显著下降，而一些大型制
冷设备是不能保证绝对密封的。对于小型家用制冷设备，又存在充灌制冷剂困难，修理不便等缺点。
还有一种非共沸混合工质，称为近共沸混合工质。
由于近共沸工质气、液相组分含量相差小，当制冷系统出现泄漏时，不致引起混合物成分的过于改变，所以采用原
配比充灌不会引起机器性能太大变化，这样
