因为化学发展的晚…，真正近代化学的开端，正好是于牛顿死后的几十年内。顿那个年代的时候，连诸如天文，物理这类科学分支都更多被人们划分为“自然哲学”，更别说未成体系的化学学科了。化学学科的理论体系建立比较晚，被深入研究的程度也远远不及物理，十七世纪之前都是零散的知识，比如从炼金，炼丹，医药等应用方面积累下来的技术性知识，而且受到很多哲学思维流派诸如“四大原质”，“燃素论”等错误理论的影响，化学学科正确的方法论一直没建立起来。从波义耳发表《怀疑派化学家》的摸索，到门捷列夫的《元素周期表》的基本定量研究。个世纪左右的时间，近代化学才真正走出了自己的路，其中开端性的大事件是1774年拉瓦锡的“氧化学说”终结了统治化学界“燃素论”时代。这也标志着一个近代化学新的开始。而牛顿在1727年就去世了。
其实那个年代的科学家大多都是有种“博学家”的味道的。在近代科学还没有完整体系化细化分支的时候，科学研究的方法论还不成熟的时候，很多物理学家或化学家，生物学家，很会有各种跨界的成就。他们其实更准确的该被定位为科学家历史上就有很多同样是物理学家又是化学家的人，比如道尔顿，比如玻尔兹曼，吉布斯，或者你在《物理化学》这本教材里看到的任何一个人名，他都可能在众多领域有着卓越成就(热力学，统计热力学，亦或是溶液化学领域)牛顿作为一位科学巨匠论力学，光学，天文，数学，经济学，甚至是哲学上的成就都十分让人钦佩，所以于化学上没有特别重大的成果，也不是一件遗憾事了。至于晚年的牛顿“炼金”没练出个所以然是因为晚年的牛顿被神学所困，而“炼金”恰好又是化学历史上一个相当错误的时代误区(如同当年气功热)，所以走入死胡同的他，自然也没啥成果了。
牛顿近代化学的先驱在化学发展史上起到了一定的积极作用。通过炼金术，人们积累了化学操作的经验，发明了多种实验器具，认识了许多天然矿物。炼金术在欧洲成为近代化学产生和发展的基础，在中国火药不也是通过这样的方式发现的，火药可是中国最牛逼的发现之一。但是牛顿的动机千万不要和中国的长生不老药的道士混为一谈。牛顿还管理过货币，牛顿对付那些搞假币的人非常狠的，牛顿的货币改革甚至在英国建立了金本位的货币制度，这个放在今天可是拿诺贝尔经济学奖的哦！最后总结，在数学上你看的到牛顿，物理学上你看的到牛顿，经济学上你也绕不开牛顿！
