1、give是常用动词，词义丰富，用法复杂，构词能力强；其基本的词义是“给”。give作及物动词时可接名词或代词作宾语，也可接双宾语，其间接宾语有时可转换为介词to的宾语，还可接动词不定式或以“as+ n.”充当补足语的复合宾语。
2、give接双宾语时，间接宾语是人，双宾语的句型可以转变为跟to短语的句型，但当间接宾语是物时，则间接宾语在前，直接宾语在后的位置是固定的，不可以转换。
do和doing都可以用，但意思不一样：
1. give one's life to do 意思是“为……献出了生命”，give一定是过去时态，
如：He gave his life to save the boy.
2. give one's life to doing 意思是“为……奉献了一生”，give的时态不一定

give one's life to并不是一个常用的固定短语，比较认同heracer的观点。
比如devote的用法
devote oneself to doing献身于....这里的oneself跟one's life差不多的意思
He has devoted his whole life to benefiting mankind.
他把一生都献给了造福人类的事业。
devoted to sth 专心于某事
估计没人能够透彻的说清楚why or why not,就像汉字为什么这么写，不是一句两句说的完的，哈哈
本人认为是doing，give one's life说明之前他（生前）一直致力于做某事。
