为打破国民党军新的会剿，1929年1月，毛泽东、朱德率领红4军主力向赣南、闽西进军，取得了大柏地、长汀等战斗的胜利，先后建立起赣南、闽西两个革命根据地（后中共苏区中央局和中华苏维埃临时中央设在此，通称中央苏区或中央革命根据地）。到1930年上半年，全国已建立大小十几个革命根据地，红军发展到7万余人，工农武装割据的熊熊烈火燃遍中国农村的广大地区。
