Rowling remembers that she always wanted to write and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit called Rabbit. At Exeter University Rowling took her degree in French and spent one year studying in Paris. The best thing about working in an office, she has said, was typing up stories on the computer when no one was watching. During this time, on a particularly long train ride from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990, the idea came to her of a boy who is a wizard and doesn't know it. About 20 miles upstream is the county town of Gloucester. Gloucester Cathedral was used as the set for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film. Sean had a blue-and-white Ford Anglia car, in which Sean and Joanne used to drive around the countryside. Joanne had very happy memories of this car, and this was the exact model for the Weasley’s car in The Chamber of Secrets.

Ms. Rowling requested a grant from the Scottish Arts Council, which was eventually given to her, in order to complete her book. When it was completed, after several rejections, Ms. Rowling sold the novel, Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, to Bloomsbury in the UK for the equivalent of about $4,000.
