小学生思想品德教育是对小学生进行社会生活常识、政治法律常识、日常行为规范或社会公德等方面的教育。品德教育的过程必须根据小学生的年龄特点，结合小学品德与生活课的学习和教师的课余教导，使学生形成良好的德育，并教育引导学生联系实际，付诸行动，提高思想认识。由于小学阶段的学生认识意识还比较模糊、不稳定，所以，对学生进行思想品德教育时，要充分考虑小学生的这一特点，把握几个基本准则。
首先，小学思想品德教育要突出针对性。所谓针对性，是指根据学生实际，有的放矢，及时帮助学生改掉不良习惯和纠正不正确的认识。如:针对学生中存在不团结、相互妒忌、关系紧张的情况，我及时进行解决、引导，抓住学生的心理特点，彻底化解矛盾。体育课上，××和××两位同学因玩羽毛球产生争吵，相互贬辱，甚至动起手脚来。解决这类学生的矛盾，首先要针对事情的严重程度和来龙去脉来教育他们。在这一点上，我列举了学校曾经发生的一宗因学生矛盾而造成双方家长动手打架的恶性事件来教育。通过事例引导他们吸取教训，认识自己的过错和鲁莽。经过教育，他们都作了自我批评和检讨，表示改正和彼此要向对方道歉的决心。他们的行动，同时也影响了其他不团结的同学，使这些同学也深受感染，互相搞好团结。
第二，思想品德教育要坚持多样化。所谓多样化，是指教育形式的多样：
课堂讲解——教师在品德与生活课上根据教材，并联系实际补充丰富德育资料向学生讲授，着重抓住德育目的，讲清人物实际，让学生感受德育道理。
课堂讨论——在讲解和认知的基础上，组织学生开展课堂讨论，让学生在讨论中加深理解，充分发挥他们的自我教育能力。
专题活动——创设机会，让学生在品德与生活课上进行有意义的德育专题活动，使学生从活动中有所悟，有收获。
第三，思想教育要有坚持示范性。所谓示范性，是指教师在对学生进行教育中，要身体力行，成为学生的模范和表率。小学生有着模仿的习惯这一特点，相反地说，教师的言行举止将直接地影响着学生的行为模式。如：教师道德修养中有“为人师表”的要求，然而，教师对学生提出了“讲究卫生”、“爱护公物”、“讲文明”等德育要求时，教师本身的品德将影响着学生，学生会产生比较的心理。所以，在教育学生时，教师要坚持示范性，不然对学生的教育便会削弱力量。
第四，加强学生教育工作，首先要优化品德与生活课的教学。所谓优化，是指教师在品德与生活课上要能有效地激发学生的兴趣，调动学生积极性，提高教学效果，达到知行统一的教学目的。另外，课外要设计练习，留置作业。练习题要从实际出发，紧扣《小学生守则》和《小学生日常行为规范》。品德与生活课的作业，主要是让学生开展社会调查，和让学生进行行为训练。学习一个品德形象，接受一个品德道理，其形式是多式多样的。让他们在校能够做个好学生，在家能够做个好孩子，在社会能够做个好公民。
