本篇是作者闲居上饶带湖时期的名作。它通过自己夜行黄沙道中的具体感受，描绘出农村夏夜的幽美景色，形象生动逼真，感受亲切细腻，笔触轻快活泼，使人有身历其境的真实感，这首词反映了辛词风格的多样性。
上片写晴，用的是"明月"、"清风"这样惯熟的词语，但是，当它们与"别枝惊鹊"和"半夜鸣蝉"结合在一起之后，便构成了一个声色兼备、动静咸宜的深幽意境，人们甚至忽略了这两句的平仄和对仗的工稳了。"月"和"惊鹊"，"风"和"鸣蝉"并非事物的简单罗列，而是有着内在的联系和因果关系的。三、四两句承上，作者抓住夏夜农村最具有特点的事物，进一步加以生发。因为夜里的能见度是有限的，所以作者的感受主要不是靠眼睛来摄取，有时还要靠嗅觉和听觉这些器官来加以捕捉。"稻花香里说丰年，听取蛙声一片"，就是从嗅觉和听觉这两方面来加以描写的。这是词中的主脑，是笼罩全篇的欢快和喜悦心情产生的根源之所在。上片虽然写的是夜晴，但却已经埋伏着雨意了。有丰富农村生活经验的人，似乎可以从"稻花香"里，从"蛙声一片"之中嗅到和听到骤雨将临的信息。
下片笔锋一转，进入写雨。但写的不是雨中，而是雨前。首句写远望之所见："七八个星天外"，说明乌云四起，透过云隙可以看到稀疏的星光。这境界，与上片的气氛已有很大的不同了。第二句；"两三点雨山前"，写的是骤雨初来，大雨将至的信息。既然，雨滴已经洒向山前，那么紧接着便会洒向山后的。作者的心情转而有些惶急了，于是很自然地引起想快些赶路或寻地避雨的心情。第三、四句写的就是这一心理活动："旧时茅店社林边，路转溪桥忽见。"因为作者平时经常往来于黄沙道中，明叨知道树林旁边有一茅草小店，但此时因为是在夜里，再加上心慌，却忽然不见了。可是，过了小溪上的石桥，再据个弯儿，那座旧时相识的茅店便突然出现在眼前，这该叫人多么高兴阿！
这首词充分反映了作者对丰收所怀有的喜悦之情以及他对农村生活的热爱。

辛弃疾（1140－1207），南宋词人。字幼安，号稼轩，历城（今山东济南）人。 原字坦夫，改字幼安，别号稼轩居士。与苏轼齐名，并称苏辛。刘辰翁《辛稼轩词序》说：“词至东坡，倾荡磊落，如诗，如文，如天地奇观。”历任湖北、江西、湖南、福建、浙东安抚使等职。出生时，山东已为金兵所占。二十一岁参加抗金义军，不久归南宋。出生前13年，山东一带即已为金兵侵占。绍兴三十一年（1161）率两千民众参加北方抗金义军，次年奉表归南宋。一生坚决主张抗击金兵，收复失地。曾进奏《美芹十论》，分析敌我形势，提出强兵复国的具体规划；又上宰相《九议》，进一步阐发《十论》的思想；都未得到采纳和施行。在各地任上他认真革除积弊，积极整军备战，又累遭投降派掣肘，甚至受到革职处分，曾在江西上饶一带长期闲居。光复故国的大志雄才得不到施展，一腔忠愤发而为词，由此造就了南宋词坛一代大家。

宫粉厌涂娇额，浓妆要压秋花。西真人醉忆仙家。飞佩丹霞羽化。十里芬芳未足，一亭风露先加。杏腮桃脸费铅华。终惯秋蟾影下。
画栋新垂帘幕，华灯未放笙歌。一杯潋滟泛金波。先向太夫人贺。富贵吾应自有，功名不用渠多。只将绿鬓抵羲娥。金印须教斗大。
金粟如来出世，蕊宫仙子乘风。清香一袖意无穷。洗尽尘缘千种。长为西风作主，更居明月光中。十分秋意与玲珑。拼却今宵无梦。
千丈悬崖削翠，一川落日熔金。白鸥来往本无心。选甚风波一任。别浦鱼肥堪脍，前村酒美重斟。千年往事已沈沈。闲管兴亡则甚。
且对东君痛饮，莫教华发空催。琼瑰千字已盈怀。消得津头一醉。休唱阳关别去，只今凰诏归来。五云两两望三台。已觉精神聚会。
人道偏宜歌舞，天教只入丹青。喧天画鼓要他听。把著花枝不应。何处娇魂瘦影，向来软语柔情。有时醉里唤卿卿。却被傍人笑问。
剩欲读书已懒，只因多病长闲。听风听雨小窗眠。过了春光太半。往事如寻去鸟，清愁难解连环。流莺不肯入西园。唤起画梁飞燕。
贪数明朝重九。不知过了中秋。人生有得许多愁。惟有黄花如旧。万象亭中殢酒。九江阁上扶头。城鸦唤我醉归休。细雨斜风时候。
堂上谋臣帷幄，边头猛将干戈。天时地利与人和。燕可伐与曰可。此日楼台鼎鼐，他时剑履山河。都人齐和大风歌。管领群臣来贺。
万事云烟忽过，百年蒲柳先衰。
而今何事最相宜？宜醉宜游宜睡。
早趁催科了纳，更量出入收支。
乃翁依旧管些儿，管竹管山管水。
秀骨青松不老，新词玉佩相磨。灵槎准拟泛银河。剩摘天星几个。奠枕楼东风月，驻春亭上笙歌。留君一醉意如何。金印明年斗大。
一柱中擎远碧，两峰旁依高寒。横陈削就短长山。莫把一分增减。我望云烟目断，人言风景天悭。被公诗笔尽追还。更上层楼一览。
醉里且贪欢笑，要愁那得功夫。
近来始觉古人书，信着全无是处。
昨夜松边醉倒，问松我醉如何？
只疑松动要来扶，以手推松曰去

明月别枝惊鹊，清风半夜鸣蝉。稻花香里说丰年，听取蛙声一片。
七八个星天外，两三点雨山前。旧时茅店社林边，路转溪桥忽见。
【译文】
明亮的月光惊动了树枝上的熟睡的鹊儿，轻轻吹拂的夜风中不时送来阵阵蝉鸣。在稻花香里，听到连着一片的蛙声，好像他们在谈论丰收的年景。天边挂着七八个星星，山前飘落着两三点小雨。往日在社林边的乡村小客店，在山路转过溪桥的地方忽然出现。
