影响最深远的莫过两次世界大战以及之间的世界金融危机。
一战中，崛起的工业大国德国向传统欧洲强国法国、英国和俄国发起了猛烈的冲击，造成了法国124万，英国90万，俄国170万士兵的人口减员，为了应对战争的巨大消耗，英国不得不向大洋彼岸的歌舞升平之邦、昔日的殖民地借负大量外债（如军火，原材料，燃料方面的物资订购和庞大的金融贷款）。虽然最终取胜，但战后的英国已经由美国的最大债主国变成了最大债权国（直白一点讲就是由借钱的变成了欠钱了），国际地位必然有所下降，这一点从对印度的态度以及凡尔赛、华盛顿两大协议的内容中可以清楚看出来。不过更悲剧还在后面，战后经济刚在20年代有所恢复，席卷整个资本主义世界的大萧条就狂啸而来。各国为了应对本国的金融挤兑风潮，纷纷开始从外国撤回资金和投资，包括英国在内，贸易所得锐减，经济基础建设因此停滞，失业率倍增，造成的恶劣影响直至第二次世界大战爆发也没能完全消除（英国政府在二战前的一系列绥靖政策，出发点也就在这里）。
然后，最惨重的打击到来。希特勒闪电战击溃大半欧洲，灭亡法国，对英国本土进行了长达一年的空中轰炸和潜艇封锁，严重摧毁了英国的工业生产，破坏了大量城市。要不是美国通过了援助法案，以英国本土国力，那就真的是岌岌可危了。而日本对其远东殖民地的扩张，更是雪上加霜。二战结束后，英国的情况可以说比一战时更差，既要重建废墟遍地的本土，又要支付战争中美国提供的大量援助物质，债务繁重，军力也大不如前，无心也无力再像以前那样维持海外殖民地的驻军，镇压各地的民族主义风潮，所以只能心有不甘地签署一系列法令，放弃对各殖民地的宗主权，颇有日暮西山的感觉，相当悲凉。
