“迦陵仙音，福十方界。”这是《楞严经》里对“妙声鸟（又名妙音鸟）”的描述，它象征着吉祥、祝福，这种“妙声鸟”又叫“迦陵频伽”，是雪山上的一种鸟，声音非常悦耳美妙。
2006年，在惠安第八届中国雕塑论坛年会会场上，有媒体曾专访了“飞天迎宾”的创作者钱绍武教授，了解到柱形城雕—“飞天迎宾”创作初衷。
钱教授当时说，城雕是1994年设计的，象征中外文化在泉州的交流，但因为它太复杂了，很多人不太理解，加上时间一久，不少人产生误解，民间甚至有人以为是骂泉州人“鸟”，对此我感觉有些遗憾。
谈到创作灵感，钱教授说，城雕“飞天迎宾”更准确的说是“妙音迎宾”。泉州是海上丝绸之路的起点，中外交流一向很发达。1994年到泉州开元寺参观时，在大堂看见一个讲经说法的作品，24个飞天围着佛奏乐。导游说这些飞天叫“迦陵平迦”，意思是妙音鸟，在歌颂佛的功德。仔细一看，发现这其实代表着希腊文化和中国文化的交流。飞天是希腊文化中的一种魔鸟，在希腊很流行，瓶瓶罐罐上都刻有，荷马史诗《奥德赛》也有记载，亚历山大东征时带到印度。但传到泉州后，魔鸟不唱歌了，改奏乐，而且奏的是泉州特有的南音，手中拿的也是南音乐器，因此说，这是非常巧妙的中西文化交流产物。
“当我接受邀请创作泉州城雕时，就把妙音鸟从开元寺‘请’了出来，弄一个大柱子，上面安排8 尊妙音鸟在吹弹歌唱。最好地象征泉州中西交流的特点。同时，大柱子给人一种冲天直上的感觉，象征泉州一直向上发展。”钱教授说。 那种认为泉州城雕“骂泉州人是鸟”的看法是有根据的，但又荒谬之极，没有一点历史观念。泉州人一眼就可以看出来，城雕的柱体造型源自于晋江岸边的石笋。石笋的造型是男根的写照，逼真而夸饰，是印度教神庙的遗存，大概宋代就已存在，距今有上千年的历史，是古代生殖崇拜的产物。石笋其所以留存至今，原因是多方面的，其中最主要的一点，是印度教和闽越巫风、汉族风水舆地之学相结合，也就是多元文化的融合。如果要给中国确定一个国雕的话，那无疑是华表，因为它自汉唐至明清，一直矗立在皇家的宫殿、陵墓前，到今天也还矗立在天门广场上。华表是生殖崇拜的产物，已广为人知。石笋1961年公布为第一批福建省重点保护文物，就其珍稀性而言，列为国家重点保护文物，也不为过。市政府结合晋江整治，建石笋公园，将石笋作为主要景观供游人瞻仰。实际上，从笋江、笋浯、笋江桥、笋江月色等名称看，石笋在过去一直也是游人玩赏的景观。既然华表可以矗立在庄严肃穆的天门广场，那么城雕为什么不能以石笋作为创作的原型之一？我们不能以今天的色情眼光来看泉州城雕，犹如不能以今天的观念来衡量古人的生殖崇拜一样。在古人看来，生殖崇拜是庄严而圣洁的活动，没有秽亵与色情的成分。世界各地、各民族都有过生殖崇拜，大多都可以找到其遗存，已是不争的事实。中国人、尤其是泉州人很多都保留了祭祖的习俗。祖字从示从且，是会意字。“且”象男根，“示”表示“神之也”，也就是祭祀。从字形上分析，祖先崇拜根源于男根崇拜，考古发掘中发现的许多“石祖”、“陶祖”，都证明了这一点。早在汉代儒家就提出“饮食、男女，人之大欲存焉”的说法，后来恩格斯在《家庭、私有制和国家的起源》中提出“两种生产”的理论，这都为人们找到原始人生殖崇拜的原因提供了理论依据，毋庸赘述。生殖崇拜作为一种民俗，具有传承性和变异性，不会轻易地随着时代的发展和生活的变化而消失，而会以极大的惰性在一些地方、某个时段表现出来。例如，以前泉州一些不孕妇女求拜或摸一下石笋，据说就可怀孕。日本一些神社供奉着男根，在九州、信州、名古屋等地,举行一些盛大节庆时,妇女们要去神庙向这些男根焚香膜拜,甚至抬着巨大的男根，带着夸张的男根面饰游行。在印度，一些印度教寺院供奉湿婆神的“林加”（男根），妇女们在“林加”前献上一把花瓣，合一下掌，然再摸一摸。毋庸讳言，原始人的生殖崇拜在漫长的传承过程中，会受后世商品交换、社会风尚的影响而变异，带有某些色情成分，如日本的生殖崇拜民俗，以妓女最为热衷和放肆。但是，我们不能一叶障目而不见泰山，否认先民走过的历史，抹杀对往昔生活的记忆。
