物资短缺给补给带来困难，但军队中的腐败进一步恶化了士兵们的生存环境 即使是嫡系部队，士兵们也总是吃不饱，不光粮食，几乎所有的军需物资都很匮乏。
每人一杆中正式七九步枪，军装每人一套，但长期不换发新军装，于是有的部队行军几个月后，军装破破烂烂，被叫做“乞丐部队”。一名摄影师拍摄的中国远征军通讯兵，站在路边摇电话，他的军衣肩部和腰部缝着两大块补丁，即使这样，在背部还是有一个长长的裂口，裤子又肥又短，草鞋的鞋带勒着青筋暴露的脚，只有头上戴的钢盔和斜挎的印有“US”字母的绿背包，显示出这是一个军人，而钢盔和背包，无疑都是美国人配给的装备。
士兵们脚上的鞋也是自己打的。一名排长最重要的工作之一就是教新兵们学打草鞋，用绳子和破布条与麻草搓成的鞋耐穿，能走两个月，如果只用麻草，这样的鞋穿三四天就散了架。于是，中国远征军的士兵们在搜集战利品时，往往连死尸上的破布条也不放过。
物资短缺固然给补给带来困难，但军队中的腐败，无疑进一步恶化了士兵们的生存。
亲身感受了军队中的腐败。“1943年部队在保山驻防，准备渡江。战前分发物资，上好的美国进口咔叽布制服，还有皮鞋、毛袜子，各种罐头。结果军需官给每人只发了六尺黄布，听说军需官串通一些长官把军队的物资倒卖到内地，大理的市面上就经常见到各种军队物资出售。整个部队的物资分配从不公开，完全暗箱操作，想得到好装备，就要给长官行贿。
美国人研究了中国军队的伙食分配制度后总结：按照部队规章，每个士兵发给每天24盎司米，一份盐；每月一份全薪，如果全花在食物上，一个月可以买一磅猪肉。一个中国士兵靠这些配额可以很好地维持生活。可是，事实上他们真正得到的仅仅是分配给他们的食物和钱的一部分，因为长官们习以为常地为自己“克扣”很大一部分。结果是大多数国民党士兵营养不足。
