现代2019核反应堆有轻水堆、重水堆和石墨反应堆。切尔诺贝利的石墨反应堆技术仍然在使用，但是已经不再是原来的那种技术了；现代用的反应堆是压水堆，即重水堆；重水堆比石墨反应堆更安全；石墨反应堆的堆芯棒长条状；为了防止放射性物质泄漏，尖端要2头要放石墨；现代的反应堆堆芯是长方体形的。
核反应堆的种类有很多，可以按照不同的标准进行分类。一种常见的分类方法是按照核反应的类型，可以分为核裂变反应堆和核聚变反应堆。目前商业运行的反应堆都是基于核裂变的，而核聚变反应堆还处于实验阶段。
核裂变反应堆又可以按照慢化剂、冷却剂、中子速度、用途等因素进行细分。常见的核裂变反应堆有以下几种：
压水反应堆（PWR）：使用轻水（普通水）作为慢化剂和冷却剂，利用高压防止水沸腾，通过蒸汽发生器产生蒸汽驱动涡轮发电。这是目前最广泛使用的反应堆类型，占全球商业反应堆的60%以上。
沸水反应堆（BWR）：使用轻水作为慢化剂和冷却剂，利用低压使水沸腾，直接用沸水产生的蒸汽驱动涡轮发电。这是第二大常见的反应堆类型，占全球商业反应堆的20%左右。
重水反应堆（PHWR）：使用重水（富含氘的水）作为慢化剂和冷却剂，可以使用天然铀作为燃料，不需要浓缩铀。这种反应堆有压力容器式和压力管式两种结构，后者可以在运行中更换燃料。这种反应堆主要在加拿大、印度等国使用，占全球商业反应堆的5%左右。
石墨气冷反应堆（GCR）：使用石墨作为慢化剂，气体（如二氧化碳或氦）作为冷却剂，可以使用天然铀或浓缩铀作为燃料。这种反应堆主要在英国、法国等国使用，占全球商业反应堆的5%左右。
石墨液冷反应堆（LGR）：使用石墨作为慢化剂，液态金属（如钠或铅）作为冷却剂，可以使用浓缩铀或钚作为燃料。这种反应堆主要用于快中子增殖反应堆（FBR），可以利用铀238或钍232转变为可裂变的钚239或铀233，从而增加燃料资源。这种反应堆目前还处于试验阶段，只有少数几个国家在运行或建造。
石墨慢化轻水冷却反应堆（LWGR）：使用石墨作为慢化剂，轻水作为冷却剂，可以使用浓缩铀或钚作为燃料。这种反应堆主要在前苏联和俄罗斯使用，占全球商业反应堆的5%左右。切尔诺贝利核事故就发生在这种类型。。。
