牛痘疫苗（1796年）天花是世界上传染性最强的疾病之一，是由天花病毒引起的烈性传染病，天花病毒繁殖快，能在空气中以惊人的速度传播。18世纪，欧洲蔓延天花，死亡人数曾高达1亿5千万人以上。1976年，英国医生爱德华詹纳观察到患过牛痘的挤奶女工不再患天花的事实后，首创了接种牛痘疫苗预防天花这一方法。詹纳的成功不仅挽救了数亿人的生命，也开辟出了一个新的领域：免疫学。不过，直到1885年，法国微生物学家、化学家路易斯巴斯德成功研制出预防被疯犬咬伤所引起的狂犬病疫苗，医学界和一些政府才开始接受利用某些患者可以防止其他人生病这一想法。
蒸汽机（1712年）1698年托马斯塞维利、1712年托马斯纽科门和1769年詹姆斯瓦特制造了早期的工业蒸汽机。蒸汽机的出现曾引起了18世纪的工业革命。蒸汽机的发展在20世纪初达到了顶峰，成为世界上最重要的原动机。它具有恒扭矩、可变速、可逆转、运行可靠、制造和维修方便等优点，因此曾被广泛用于电站、工厂、机车和船舶等各个领域中，特别在军舰上成了当时唯一的原动机。后来，才逐渐让位于内燃机和汽轮机等。
盘尼西林（青霉素）（1928年）盘尼西林是第一种能够治疗人类疾病的抗生素。1928年，英国细菌学家亚历山大弗莱明发现了世界上第一种抗生素-青霉素。1941年前后，英国牛津大学的理学家霍华德弗洛里与生物化学家钱恩实现了对青霉素的分离与纯化，并发现其对传染病的疗效，弗莱明、弗洛里、钱恩三人因此共同获得1945年诺贝尔奖。不过，尽管抗生素于1928年首次发现，但直到二战后才广泛使用。当时，它们成为治疗以前被认为是绝症的灵丹妙药。
