Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang province, is located in the belt within 125\u00b042\u2032E to 130\u00b010\u2032E and 44\u00b004\u2032N to 46\u00b040\u2032N and situated in the northeast of China and in the south of Heilongjiang Province, the main terrain of which is flat, low-lying, however, in the east 10 counties directly under which there grow lots of mountains and uplands.

大庆油田开发建设45周年，建市25周年，是一座新兴的工业城市，也是黑龙江省重要的商品粮、畜产品、水产品生产基地。近些年来经济快速发展，社会全面进步。全市经济连续8年保持8%以上增长速度。2004年实现生产总值1239.5亿元，比上年增长10.2%。人均生产总值47667元，城市居民人均可支配收入12324.3元，人均居住面积23.3平方米。大庆恩格尔系数为29.3%，人民群众总体生活水平正在向最富裕阶段迈进。
大庆是中国最大的石油工业基地。油田累计探明石油地质储量56.7亿吨，累计生产原油18.21亿吨，占同期全国陆上石油总产量的47%；探明天然气地质储量548.2亿立方米。原油生产连续27年保持在5000万吨以上高产稳产，创造了世界同类油田的奇迹。目前年产油气当量继续保持在5000万吨以上，油田企业在全国重点纳税企业中一直名列榜首，是中国第一纳税大户。大庆累计向国家上缴各种资金9000多亿元。
大庆是中国重要的石化工业基地。全市现有大中型石化企业14家，年加工能力：原油1570万吨、乙烯48万吨、合成树脂66万吨、润滑油46.6万吨、尿素48万吨、腈纶8万吨、聚丙烯酰胺5.5万吨。业已形成集炼油、化工、化纤、塑料为主体的化工产业群，初步建起燃料油、润滑油、腈纶纤维、油田化学品、合成树脂及合成橡胶、有机化工原料、化肥等7个生产基地，拥有石化产品60多种150多个牌号。
大庆地方经济健康快速发展。地方工业连续3年以40%的速度递增。发展了食品、医药、电子信息、新材料等一批支柱产业，建设了大豆产业园、精细化工园、皮革城、轻纺城、石蜡工业园、橡胶工业园、注塑城、塑编城等优势产业园区，初步形成了产业集群。农业实施“农转牧”战略，加快发展畜牧业。全市奶牛、肉牛、肉羊、生猪、大鹅分别达到25.3万头、24.9万头、108.7万只、98.0万头、136.9万只，畜牧业实现增加值20.5亿元，占全市农业增加值的51%。以伊利、金锣、草原兴发为代表的龙头企业发展到48家，形成了150万头生猪、300万只大鹅、80万吨鲜奶加工能力。实施旱涝保收田建设工程，目前全市旱涝保收高产稳产基本农田发展到276万亩，农村经济发展新格局初步形成。教育、文化、医疗、体育、旅游业繁荣兴旺，辟建大学园、高中城，拥有8所大学、10所示范性高中、近百个科研院所，有一批现代化综合医院和专科医院。绿色温泉游、民族风情游、石油文化游独具特色。大庆正在成为龙江西部教育、文化、医疗、体育、旅游中心。
