种子可供食用，种子煨熟的味道如栗子。原产于中国、印度、越南、印度尼西亚等地，在中国广东以南常植栽为庭院树，木材轻韧，可制器具。广东习俗中苹婆果实是七姐诞的祭品，若没有便会用假苹婆果实代替。由于苹婆年产量少，加上祭祀习俗熄微，故很少大量种植的果园，只有零星种植。
