learn about 是固定搭配，有学习的意思。
learn of 的意思是：获悉
We learned of her illness only yesterday.
我们昨天才听说她病了。

a lot of 重在于表示物品的数量;后可加可数名词也可以带不可数名词。
如:a lot of books,很多书a lot of milk很多牛奶

不过我觉得应该还是以固定搭配为主。英语中很多用法是说不清楚的，但是人家外国人就是那么说。记住就好了...这是多年的经验...

a lot 是运来修饰learn
并不是修饰Chinese histoy
所以用about
