敦煌壁画中的飞天，与洞窟创建同时出现。从十六国开始，历经十个朝代，历时千余年，直到元代末期，随着敦煌石窟的停建而消逝。在这千余年的历史长河中，由于朝代的更替、政权的转移、经济的发展繁荣、中西文化的频繁交流等历史情况的变化，飞天的形象、姿态和意境、风格，都在不断地变化，其演变史同整个敦煌艺术发展史大体一致，分为四个阶段。
1.兴起时期。从十六国北凉到北魏（366～535年），大约170余年。此时期的敦煌飞天深受印度和西域飞天的影响，大体上是西域式飞天。但这一时期两个朝代的飞天特点也略有不同。
莫高窟北凉时期的飞天多画在窟顶平棋岔角、窟顶藻井装饰、佛龛上沿和本生故事画主体人物的头上。其造型和艺术特点是：头有圆光，脸型椭圆，直鼻大眼，大嘴大耳，耳饰环珰，头束圆髻，或戴花蔓，或戴印度五珠宝冠，身材粗短，上体半裸，腰缠长裙，肩披大巾。由于晕染技法变色，成为白鼻梁、白眼珠，与西域龟兹等石窟中的飞天，在造型、面容、姿态、色彩、绘画技艺上都十分相似。由于莫高窟初建时，敦煌地区的画师画工尚不熟悉佛教题材和外来艺术，处于模仿阶段，运笔豪放，着色大胆，显得粗犷朴拙。如莫高窟北凉第275、272窟中的飞天。
莫高窟北魏时期的飞天所画的范围扩大了。不仅画在窟顶平棋、窟顶藻井、故事画、佛龛上，还画在说法图、佛龛内两侧。北魏的飞天形象大体上还保留着西域式飞天的特点，但有一些洞窟里的飞天形象，已发生了明显的变化，逐步向中国化转变。飞天的脸型已由丰圆变得修长，眉清目秀，鼻丰嘴小，五官匀称谐调。头有圆光，或戴五珠宝冠，或束圆髻。身体比例逐渐修长，有的腿部相当于腰身的两倍。飞翔姿态也多种多样了，有的横游太空，有的振臂腾飞，有的合手下飞，气度豪迈大方，势如翔云飞鹤。飞天起落处，朵朵香花飘落，颇有“天花乱坠满虚空”的诗意。如莫高窟北魏第251、260窟的飞天。
