1.苯丙胺类兴奋剂属于拟交感神经类中枢兴奋剂，其作用机理主要是促进脑内儿茶酚胺递质释放等，从而产生了一系列的神经系统兴奋和欣快感，然而过量或长期使用此类药物对人体的毒性作用也是很强的，而且是多方面的。苯丙胺类兴奋剂（冰毒、麻古）滥用严重损害心肌血管系统，表现为胸痛（但心电图无明显改变）、心肌梗塞、心肌病、高血压、心律失常（心房和心室的失常）以致于猝死等。
2.苯丙胺（冰毒、麻古）能导致脑实质出血，硬膜下出血和珠网膜下腔出血等症的颅内出血。
3.苯丙胺类兴奋剂（冰毒、麻古）均属于低分子量化合物，可以直接通过胎盘进入胎儿体内产生直接的毒性作用，尤其是妊娠前三个月危害更为严重，因此染毒的孕妇可导致胎儿骨骼系统致畸，表现为短肢、少肋、新生儿心脏先天性发育畸形等。
4.由于苯丙胺类兴奋剂（冰毒、麻古）兴奋机制，产生肺脏血管痉挛导致动脉血管内膜损伤，纤维蛋白物质沉积以及血管基质增生而引起肺源性肺动脉病变--肺动脉高压病。
5.苯丙胺、利他林和匹莫林，可引起肝细胞性坏死，肝功能衰竭等症。苯丙胺类兴奋剂可导致横纹肌溶解，出现高胆红素血症和肾衰竭而出现高尿血症、低钙血症等。
