古体诗的用韵比近体诗要宽松，可以押平声韵，也可以押仄声韵，既可以一韵到底，也可以中间换韵，有时也允许通韵和重韵，但每次换韵前不得少于两韵。
词的用韵比诗更为宽松，不仅平水韵中的邻韵可以通押，上去声也可以通押，而且古人的作品中还有不少是以方音押韵的，这主要是唐宋人填词多倚口语押韵的缘故。清代时戈氏根据唐宋人词作品的大多数情况，在平水韵基础上编纂了一部《词林正韵》。由于这部韵书是以“平水韵”作为基础的，只是把其中一些读音比较邻近的韵部进行了归并、拆解或重新组合，符合诗人们的用韵习惯，所以逐渐为词人们所接受，词人们填词也就渐渐依据这部韵书押韵。
《词林正韵》共分十九个韵部，除了十五到十九五个入声韵部单列外，其他十四个韵部都平仄另列。词的用韵比较复杂，不同的词调对韵有不同的规定，有押平韵的，也有押仄韵的，还有平仄互押的；有一韵到底的，也有中间换韵的。总之，词是倚照词谱来填，哪里需要押韵，哪里不需要，是用仄韵还是用平韵，是一韵到底还是中间换韵，词谱中都有规定，只需依照词谱安排押韵就可以了。
诗有韵，就如同屋有柱子；柱不稳，则屋必倾。韵不稳，则诗必劣。所以押韵方面有些情况当有所戒，尤其对初学者来说不可不知：1）凑韵：俗称也叫挂韵，就是说所押韵字，与全句意思不相贯串，而勉强凑合上一个韵字。2）落韵：也就是俗称的出韵。
3）重韵：同一个韵字在一首诗中重复出现，哪怕是一字两义而并押之，也算重韵。重韵在近体诗中是不允许的，但在古体诗中允许重韵。4）倒韵：也就是说将二字颠倒以就合韵脚而押韵。这种情况在某些词语颠倒后对于词的理解无多大影响情况下也可以。5）哑韵：作诗当选择声音响亮的韵押之，自然音调高超。若用哑韵则非但诗句不挺，也会使全诗因之萎弱。6）僻韵：又名险韵，指那些僻字或单字只义的字。
7）同义韵：用同义字重复押韵，如花葩、芳香、忧愁等，分别意义相同，一诗并押未免重复可厌。8）同字义异韵：同一个字，往往有多义，不可勉强借义凑押。如属于“四支韵”的思字，不可作情思之思押，这方面初学最宜审慎。
无论是写诗还是填词，“唱和”是经常遇到的情况。唱和不一定要和韵，但有人喜欢显示自己的才能，唱和时不仅和意，而且还“和韵”。和韵分为如下几种类型：1）次韵：又称步韵，即用原诗相同的韵字，且前后次序都必须相同，这是最常见的一种方式。 2）用韵：即使用原诗中的韵字，但不必依照其原来的次序。 3）依韵：即用与原诗同一韵部的字，但不必用其原字。
