《十送红军》反映的是第二次国内革命战争时期（1927——1937年）的历史故事，但是主要是反映1928年——1934年之间的历史。
《十送红军》作为电视连续剧《长征》片尾曲，其悠扬而凄婉的歌声，给人们留下难忘的印象。但直到2001年7月3日，剧中才恢复了歌作者朱正本的署名。此歌很容易被认为是一首江西革命民歌，而事实上它却是一首编创歌曲。在《长征》播出后，作者朱正本向媒体介绍了《十送红军》的创作经过。
“1960年春，我们空政文工团几位创作人员到江西采风。在当地我了解到：第二次国内革命战争时期，井冈山革命根据地战斗频繁。每当红军上前线，各个村子的百姓经常到村头、河边、大道旁送别红军，有时一边送一边唱。其中一首送别红军歌，曲调非常口语化，歌词中夹杂着不少俚语、方言，唱半句，停半句，旋律婉转优美
