子张问孔子:“如何就可以从政呢?”孔子说:“要尊重五种美德,摒除四种恶政,就可以从政了。”子张说:“五种美德是什么?”孔子说:“君子使百姓得到好处,自己却无所耗费,安排劳役,百姓却不怨恨,有欲望,而不贪图财利,安舒矜持,而不骄傲放肆,庄重威严,而不凶猛。”

《论语义疏》成书于南朝梁武帝年间,南宋乾道、淳熙以后亡佚,清乾隆年间由日本传回中国,其真实性无庸置疑。

在《论语义疏叙》中,皇侃对《论语》的撰集成书、“论语”二字的意义及“论”前“语”后的原因、《论语》的不同传本等问题进行了详尽的论述。

皇侃不仅经注文并疏,兼存疑说,而且采用了“义疏”体的新注解体例。该体例在文体上采用了分章段疏解和自设问答的手法。

侃为疏解,略于名物制度,阐经释义,兼采老、庄玄学,亦兼采旧儒众说,不拘家法,随意发挥。特别大量地搜集了前代及当代玄学家对于《论语》的某些字句解释,故研究玄学家们怎样把孔子老子化。此疏是一部很好的资料。

同时,由于受佛教把讲经记录编为讲疏、讲义的影响。此疏较何注更为详尽;对于南学中的“天命心性”学说。侃亦有所发挥。总之,此书是保存下来的南学的主要经注之一,代表了当时的学风。书成以后,受学者所重。
