这次在澳大利亚海滩上发现的美人鱼来自哪里呢？是亚特兰蒂斯吗？一个沉入海底的神秘国度？有些科学家试图用科学分析美人鱼的成因，他们说，在人类进化史上有一段空白期，是否在那个时期，人类的进化产生分化，一个生活在深海，一个生活在陆地，同时两者也有相同的智慧。众所周知，鲸鱼和海豚也是海中的哺乳动物，有人说，人鱼的祖先很可能是猿猴。
在中国和菲律宾也发现过类似的人鱼类生物尸体。中国的是在1980年，一南海渔民捕到一只人鱼尸体，后来被一个不明人士买走。还有菲律宾渔民也打捞出过人鱼尸体，只是网上流传的那些照片，与童话中的出入太大，很难看，而且很矮小。
各地的美人鱼事件最后都是没有答案的。很多人也怀疑这些东西的真假。有些人认为那些声称目击美人鱼的人实际上看到的是海牛。因为海牛就是平时会趴在石头上，然后会跳下水捕食。
让一些不知道那是海牛的人误以为是一个带尾巴的人跳下去了。难道海牛是就是美人鱼吗？
