MK48－6AT鱼雷推进系统是以MK48－4型鱼雷的动力舱段和燃料舱为基础，用降噪技术和MK48－6的电源系统进行改进而制成的。MK48－6AT鱼雷推进系统能使鱼雷在浅水和深水都能有效作战，并且使鱼雷航程远、速度高及具有变速能力。
MK48－6AT鱼雷推进系统使用“奥托”Ⅱ燃料。该燃料以硝酸脂为基础，是一种高能和安全的单组元推进剂。通过广泛的试验与应用，证明它是安全的，对装卸冲击。振动和温度都不敏感。
由于点燃困难，该推进剂具有较低的火险。“奥托”Ⅱ燃料很稳定，没有腐蚀性，因此具有良好的贮存性能，能在鱼雷燃料舱中保持10年而不需任何维护，在通常贮存条件下，贮存万年仍然安全和有效，无需任何维护和监视。“奥托”Ⅱ的安全性能大大超过了目前鱼雷使用的其它燃料，在潜艇上也不需要任何专门的处理。“奥托”Ⅱ燃料已使用了35年以上而未出现安全问题。MK48－6AT鱼雷燃料舱内装有312千克“奥托”11燃料。
MK48－6AT鱼雷降噪改进大大降低了鱼雷的辐射噪音。其降噪的主要措施为加装一个内部消音器。后段壳体上加了阻尼减振层。推进器转子改为侧斜转子。
该推进系统具有快速启动性能，允许鱼雷在任何水深发射。其发射方式可以是有推进发射或自航发射。
MK48-6AT鱼雷推进系统在潜艇上不需维护、监视或环境控制。舰队配发的该雷最少有5年的搁置寿命。所有的活动部件都经过了安全测试，完全合格而被批准服役。经过上万次的水中航行已证明MK48鱼雷推进系统的可靠性。
