Passage 4

We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see
it until whatever we’ve become used to suddenly disappears. 1 , for example, the neatly-dressed woman I 2 to see—or look at—on my way to work each morning.
For three years, no matter what the weather was like, she was always
waiting at the bus stop around 8:00 am. On 3 days, she wore heavy clothes and a pair of woolen gloves. Summertime brought out neat, belted cotton dresses and a hat pulled low over her sunglasses. , she was an ordinary working woman. Of course, I 5 all this only after she was seen no more. It was then that I realized how much I expected to see her each morning. You might say I 6 her.
“Did she have an accident? Something 7 ?” I thought to myself about her 8 . Now that she was gone, I felt I had known her. I began to realize that part of our 9 life probably includes such chance meetings with familiar 10 : the milkman you see at dawn, the woman who 11 walks her dog along the street every morning, the twin brothers you see at the library. Such people are 12 markers in our lives. They add weight to our 13 of place and belonging.
Think about it. If, while walking to work, we mark where we are by
14 a certain building, why should we not mark where we are when we
pass a familiar, though 15 person?

Last week, all the teachers and
students of our school watched a special performance. The second programme 1(touched) me. The performer was very young, but his 2(hands) had both been burnt in a big fire. I did not 3(dare) to look at his wrists very 4 (closely).
What I5(did) do was listen to his song quietly. It was
called “Late 6(Autumn) ” and he sang
with a low gentle voice. Though it was warm spring, I felt a bit 7(chilly) and a little sentimental (感伤的) 8(as if) it was late
autumn. “How much love and pain is hidden in the heart? I want to hold your
hand again.” When I heard this, I tried to hold back my 9(tears) . Holding her hand is just a(n) 10(dream). I hope that he finds a lovely girl for company one day,
11(though) he can’t hold hand. 12(There) was another young man who used his feet as his “hands”
because his arms had been cut off. His 13(words)greatly impressed us. Two big characters – “Flying High” expressed his wish.
All the performers were young except their special teacher who was over forty
years old. Despite their 14(disability), the
young performers gave off a(n) 15 glow (光芒). To be young means to have all kinds of 16(possibilities) . We should challenge our 17(limits)and go 18(beyond) ourselves. As long as we work hard, miracles (奇迹) will happen 19(sooner or later) . Just as the saying goes, “Where there is a 20(will), there is a way.”
