不能断章取义，一定要看全句:
Look in back on how it was in years gone by.
分开理解结构Look in back on 谓语/how it was宾语 /in years gone by状语.三个部分不能混淆。这个was和gone完全是两个部分。
现在说说时态，回头看看这些年来都怎么过的。确定一个时间点，it was,过去怎么过的，这个应该是过去时，这个应该确定吧？后面in the years gone by=in the years that has gone by.是完成时，表示已经过去的几年里。
不会用过去完成时，过去完成时表示在过去一个时间点之前已经发生，而how it was都发生在这几年里，不是之后。
首先，是looking不是look in，：-）
应该是 that have gone by, 相对现在而言的。

是looking,look back on,没有look in back on；
不是has，是have，因为是years.
