UCLA当然是名校了。2012年排名25，作为加州系列的大学之一，UCLA仅次于UCBerkeley。由于UC系列的大学都属于公立院校，而美国大学排名考虑的因素非常多，其中财力也是考查的项目之一。所以公立院校的整体学术水准是要减20来看的，也就是说，UCLA排名25，它的教学水平科研能力可以与排名（25-20）=5这样的学校并驾齐驱。
至于一些人认为UCLA很水，或许是由于加州整体华人比例较高的缘故。但真正有过申请经验的人都知道，UCLA的申请难度还是很大的，很水的人还真是没有什么录取的希望。

我是在美国生活长大的。说实话，对于这里人来说，UCLA 只能算是一般的好学校，不能说是顶尖名校。在外国人面前提起这个校名也不会让人觉得有什么稀奇，只能说明你高中时的成绩并不差。如果你说你在中国读清华北大，反而还会让人觉得你比较厉害。原因是因为对于住在国外的人来说 UCLA 其实并不难进，只要高中成绩稍微好点，被录取的概率就很大。在国外真正牛逼而且能称上名校的还是那些私立学校。

简单的说，对于一个国内想到国外来学习的人来说，UCLA 是个不错的学校。对于一个在国外生活长大的人来说，虽然 UCLA 确实是好学校 （绝对不烂），但我觉得在大众学生眼里算不上名校。

UCLA可以算是UC系列里的第二强，仅次于伯克利。虽然是公立大学但需要的分数还是很高，SAT1900+也不一定能上，UC系列学校学生人数都是美国数一数二的，认可度较高，个别科系属于美国top10,综合排名也很高。其实我个人也很想考这所学校，我一个哥哥就是UCLA医学院毕业的，现在在美国当医生，年薪也很高= = 不过很难考就是了，录取率和超低，据说当年他sat考了2200+
虽然比起Harvard 等常春藤,或 MIT, stanford等相比可能还不行，但是综合体质绝对是比得上北大、清华的

清北在大陆响当当，在美国除了华人和学术圈个别人，基本没啥人知道。
一般而言，UCLA，具体说是UC这个大学系统，知道的人还是不少的，当然，如果你说自己是UC毕业的肯定是不如Harvard,Yale，或者College of William and Mary那样吧能让人惊讶下。
还有，美国这名校情结真的没有中国重，有时候都感觉名校情结是中国文化一部分了。
