一、汉字的起源与书法的产生
汉字的起源可以追溯到六千年以前。考古成果表明，距离今天五千年至六千年前的新石器时代陶器符号，应该就是汉字的原始形态。后来汉字形体的发展，正是在这一基础上不断丰富和完善的过程。这类符号大多数刻划在陶器上，也有一部分是用毛笔一类的工具写画在陶器上，其中最具代表性的是仰韶文化时代的陶器符号。
到了商代，汉字已经发展得相当成熟。那时占卜和祭祀活动在社会生活中占有重要的位置，人们把占卜和祭祀的内容记录下来，再书写并刻划在龟甲或兽骨上面保存起来。这种书刻在龟甲兽骨上的文字被称作甲骨文。与新石器时代的陶器符号相比，甲骨文不仅字形数量大大增加，而且具有稳定的结构规律，是已知最早的汉字成熟体系。
西周与春秋战国时期是青铜铸造的繁荣阶段。周朝的王室及大小诸候铸造了难以计数的各类青铜器，同时把当时的战争、祭祀、赏赐、分封等重要事件用文字记录并铸刻在青铜器上。这些保留在青铜器上的文字被后人统称为金文或钟鼎文。除金文外，这一时期还有许多书写在竹简、丝帛或镌刻在石头上的字迹被保存下来。书写、铸造和镌刻等不同手段形成了不同的艺术效果，也反映出当时书法艺术的多样性。
春秋战国时期，诸候争霸，各自为政，文字的使用也不相一致。公元前221年，秦国扫平六国，建立了秦朝。秦始皇推行了一系列统一措施，其中最重要的一项便是废除此前各诸候国的字体，而将秦国字体加以规范整理，作为新的标准字体在全国推行，从此，汉字进入了统一规范的发展阶段。秦朝统一后颁布的标准字体称为小篆或秦篆，统一前的秦国字体则称为大篆。后人将从甲骨文到小篆发展过程中出现的各种字体统称为篆书。
从战国后期开始，人们对篆书结构和书写方法进行了简化改造，形成了一种新的书体——隶书，随后从中演变出草书、楷书和行书三种书体。至此，汉字的结构特征基本固定下来，再也没有发生大的转变，而书法的发展也从字体的演变转向书写技法和艺术风格的探索。
二、书法的实用价值与艺术特征
书法是从实用书写活动中产生出来的艺术形式，其表现方式是运用特定的工具和技巧对汉字进行创造性书写。因此，书法艺术在长期发展过程中，始终与文字的实用价值紧密结合在一起。
首先，历代统治者都希望自己的所作所为和“功绩”能够流传后世，永久不灭，因而不断将记录事件、歌功颂德或宗教祭祀的文字内容通过甲骨、青铜和石碑等载体保留下来；其次，在印刷术出现以前，语言文字的传播主要靠抄写来承担，所以保存在竹木简、丝帛及纸上的历代墨迹基本都是书籍、公文、佛经以私人书信、手稿等内容；此外，虽然唐代以后出现了大量专供欣赏、收藏的书法作品，但书写内容的可读性仍然是书法艺术的首要原则。可以说，实用价值一直是书法艺术能够延续几千年，并且不断繁荣提高的重要原因。
在长期的书写实践中，人们不仅发现了汉字结构的审美价值，同时也概括总结了书写时需要掌握的技法原则。书法的技法主要包括笔法、结字和章法三个部分。笔法又称用笔，指书写时控制和运用毛笔的技巧；结字又称间架结构，指书写时对点画位置和字形结构的安排，章法又称布局，指整幅作品中字与字、行与行之间的排列规律及相互联系。不论是哪一种书体、一件作品的技法都是由笔法、结字和章法这三部分组成的。而在不同的书体中，对笔法、结字和章法的要求各不相同，这种要求便是书法的技法原则。技法原则与作者审美意趣的融合统一，便是书法最主要的艺术特征。
三、书法在传统文化中的地位
在中国的传统文化中，书法艺术占有十分重要的位置。与文学、绘画、戏剧、音乐等艺术门类不同，书法是中国文化独有的现象。世界各民族虽然都有自己的文字，但只有中国的汉字能够从实用书写中发展出一门独立的艺术形式。这一方面说明汉字本身除了作为语言符号外还具有造型审美价值；另一方面也反映了中华民族的聪明才智与审美习惯。
