2、管理和调教 画眉是“性大”的鸟，需要经常到郊外或公园去溜。遛时罩上笼套，笼底去掉托粪板。遛鸟不但可以使鸟兴奋，还可增加腿的力量，鸟叫的“冲”。
3、笼的特点 画眉(亚)科的大型种类身体强壮，好斗而且善斗，决不可把两只雄鸟同笼饲养，否则会打伤致残或死亡。笼子要坚固，笼条要粗。新捕来的生鸟野性大，乱扑乱撞，需放入板笼中。画眉科的鸟多生活在南方潮湿丛林中，喜欢水浴，最好备有专门水浴笼。根据画眉吃昆虫、果实及种子，粪便稀软的特点，笼底应为亮底，下有托粪板。所有画眉(亚)科、鸫(亚)科的大型种均可使用画眉笼。
4、画眉喜欢水浴，除严冬和换羽期外，宜每天水浴一次。可用专门水浴笼或笼内放水盘，水的深度不得超过鸟的跗蹠部。初次水浴的鸟不要强迫或用水喷，应使其逐渐习惯，以免受惊，形成“仰头”毛病。食、水每天或隔日换一
次，保持清洁，水罐中的水不宜添得过满，防止鸟自行洗浴，“呛”坏歌喉而变得嘶哑。每周清刷笼底2—3次。
5、画眉“嘴”很灵，善模仿，鸣声十分悦耳，但时间久了会忘掉，尤其是经过换羽期。“叫口”排列顺序也不象百灵那样稳定，即所谓“活口”，所以叫口顺序要求不严。
6、平常应把笼挂起，不宜置地面，高度以鸟与人眼齐为宜，这样可防止仰头。笼套是否打开，应视画眉驯熟程度而定。喂食、水时先给以信号，避免突然惊吓。另外，不要轻易用手抓鸟，不得已时，可在黄昏或晚上灯下捕捉。嘴过长时，应换新的粘砂或亮开笼底放在土地上任其掘磨。亦有把花生米或葵花籽仁与粗砂粒混装在“食栅”中让鸟啄磨的。
一般可喂食粮食类的或者昆虫类的食物。粮食类的可以是小米，大米，碎玉米等常见谷物类。昆虫的话可以是蚱蜢，蝗虫等。其他的，如一些肉末，碎水果等也是可以的。和人的饮食类似，一般一天分早中晚共喂食三次。
