This poem was written in 1914 by Laurence.
and by chance if u are interested in history, ww1 starts from 1914 to 1918. So this poem indeed reflects the attitudes of UK civilians on ww1 by that time. More details arise that the Black Hand event occured on June 28 1914, whereas thanksgiving is 4 month after which is October.

1) Obviously the subject of this poem is, as Omen said, " to mourn over the fallen soilders" in the battleground of ww1.
2) To my first expression, the poet mingles all kinds of feelings: there are sorrow, admiration, excitement (yes war is exciting to some ppl!) and serenity. No war would be perfect but yet they have to fight for UK's honor and freedom. Feel the author's words:
-sorrow: "There is music in the midst of desolation"
-admiration: "They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe"
-inner excitement: "Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight"
-serenity/calm: "As the stars are known to the Night"

3) audience, in 2007, are everyone -.-" wat a stupid Qs.
4) it is hard to tell the poet's attidute, what i can see is that the poet does not like wars, but however, unfortunately the war must take place. there are no other choices. The poet does encourage ppl to fight yet... he mourns for the dead.
5) based on 2) and 4), i believe the poet has multiple intention: 1. life of the living ones should say "thank you" to the dead.

2. war is not a good thing that they wanted. but young men are required to fight. and we will remember your brave heart.

3. the fact that every things comes to serenity. so dont worry about wat we are doing now.

these are the ideas come to me straight away. but i am sure that u must have ur personal opinions. bear in mind that back to 1914, ppl will have very different thoughts as you. War just starts! it is terrifying but compulsary!
gl and hf!
