荷花和莲花是同一种花。中国北方一直称莲为荷。 莲在古代的称呼很多，在「诗经」中将莲花称作水芙蓉、水芝、泽芝、水华、水环；东汉时，佛教东传中国，莲也被中国人视为吉祥花卉，不但广为栽种，而且还采食莲子、莲蓬、莲藕。至於将莲称作「荷」，则是古中国人称莲的绿茎为荷，后来，莲与荷两者混为一谈，才索性通用。 其实有一种和荷花很像的叫睡莲。睡莲文雅的古称是“芙蓉”，临沂的土语称作“芙蕖”。多是栽种在深盆里，置放于浅水。
