英文介绍:清明节的由来

1. Qing Ming Jie (Tomb-Sweeping Day)
Qing Ming, a time to honor the deceased and express filial piety, is one of the significant festivals in China. It falls approximately 106 days after the winter solstice, marking the transition from spring to early summer. The festival is marked by the traditional activity of tomb-sweeping, which symbolizes respect for ancestors. In some regions, this practice extends over a month, reflecting the practical nature of the Chinese people.
2. Origin of Qing Ming
The festival is often associated with the story of Jie Zi Ji, a loyal subject who saved his lord by offering a piece of his own flesh. When the lord became a ruler, he invited Jie to join him, but Jie preferred a hermit's life. The lord, attempting to force Jie out by burning the mountain, inadvertently caused Jie's death. In memory of Jie, the lord decreed that no fires could be lit on the day of Jie's death, leading to the "cold food feast." Over time, the Qing Ming festival has replaced the "cold food" festival, yet the essence remains—a day to remember elders by visiting their graves or ancestral tablets and sharing the story of Jie Zi Ji's unwavering loyalty.
3. Customs of Qing Ming
- Tomb-Sweeping: This practice involves cleaning and paying respects at the graves of ancestors. In Wuxi, a traditional custom involves bringing new soil to repair graves, with new wives visiting the family tomb for the first time, known as "visiting the flower grave."
- Ta Qing (Taking a Spring Outing): With the arrival of spring, people enjoy outdoor activities such as picnics and appreciating the beauty of nature. In Wuxi, visiting Huishan is a popular choice for踏青.
- Placing Willow branches by the Door and Wearing Willow Branch Hats: These customs are believed to have originated from the story of Jie Zi Ji. It is said that Jie sought refuge under a willow tree and, the following year, the willow had grown. Moved, the lord wore a willow branch as a crown, setting a precedent for others to follow. The willow was named "Qing Ming Willow," and the day was named Qing Ming.
4. Qing Ming and the Solar Terms
Qing Ming is both a solar term and a festival. It is the fifth solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, marking the arrival of spring and the revival of nature. The custom of placing willow branches by the door, tomb-sweeping, and taking spring outings are all in tune with the season's activities. The agricultural saying "Qing Ming busy with seed sowing" reflects the importance of this time for farmers. The blooming of various flowers during Qing Ming, including peach, apricot, and willow, signifies the purity and clarity of the season, giving rise to the name "Qing Ming."
