内容 画像石的主要内容可分为以下6类:
①庄园经 济条件下的生产劳动。主要有农耕、收获、放牧、采桑、纺织、采盐等，作品记录生产过程或特点胜于刻画人的神态。
②体现墓主人仕宦身份、经历的礼仪与象征物。有数量众多的车骑出行、射猎、谒见、属吏、武库、收租、讲学、建筑等画面。
③墓主人生活。有以人、物数量 多为特点的燕居、宴饮、宾客、庖厨、乐舞、百戏、博弈等画面,它们描绘的并非是具体的某次活动,而是贵族地主典型的社交与享乐方式。
④历史故事和历史人物像。前者主要有周公辅成王、荆轲刺秦王、二桃杀三士，后者多为孔子及其弟子、烈女、孝子等，作品反映出当时流行的忠勇、仁义、节孝等道德伦理，带有明确的政治 褒贬倾向。
⑤神话故事、祥瑞物象与天象图。这类作品呈两种面貌:一种主题单一,如西王母、后羿射日等基本 上是远古神话情节不断蜕变后的固定造型；另一种则二位一体或三位一体，即神、祥瑞物象与方位、日月星座 功能同一、形象复合的伏羲、女娲、嫦娥以及龙、虎、鹿、羽人、朱雀、玉璧、仙草等神和具有神格的物象。
⑥各种以植物为母题的花纹和图案。其中部分象征吉祥 意义，主要作为画像石的边饰，也有单独的画面。
画像石内容因地而异。如山东为历史故事、战争、刑徒，河南为天象、杂技、斗兽、收租，陕西为农作、祥瑞物象、云气蔓草，江苏为纺织、犁耕，四川为宴饮、伏羲、女娲等。 画像石是汉代厚葬习俗的产物。统治阶级提倡孝廉，使厚葬成为与仕途升浮相关的社会行为。与此同时，死后灵魂升天的希冀在战国木椁墓向汉代砖石墓演变之后，更多赋予墓室以象征意义，即墓室是墓主生前环境的缩影。功利目的与“死即再生”的观念吻合，不仅导致画像石在墓中的数量渐多，而且规定了画像石的功能通过它们在墓中的位置体现出来。画像石在墓中的分布一般为：墓门通常是带有朱雀、龙、虎的铺首衔环，或是文武门吏；中心位置的前室或主室壁画、横楣上是阙、车骑、宴饮、乐舞；后室或侧室壁上是庖厨、农作等；后壁上方是西王母，室顶是天象图；祥瑞物与图案则穿插于壁面、立柱与室顶上。在以祭祀为主要用途的地面祠 堂中,画像石依题材集中分处各壁,历史人物与孝子烈女故事居壁面中间位置,神话故事在三角楣上,构成适于观 看的形象层次。石阙上的画像石主要起装饰作用，龙虎衔璧为主要内容，车骑及其他祥瑞物镶嵌于阙基和檐额等处。但是，相当数量的画像石在墓中的分布没有严格的定制，某些地区还自有特点。例如陕北画像石的精美 作品主要集中在由门楣、立柱、门扇结合的墓门上，四川画像石主要在中室壁面中段形成一条饰带，装饰意义代替了具体的象征。
艺术风格 画像石艺术风格是构图方式、造型特点、雕刻技法统一的体现。主要的构图方式遵从了传统法则，即以平面的散点和分层方式布局，形象按上下层次、左右关系获得在空间中的位置，没有提供向纵深延伸的暗示。由此，作品中的空间在逻辑上超越客观真实而成为表意的概念空间，这在历史、神话故事及车骑出行等画面上最为明显。另一部分作品——典型的如庄园、收租、宴饮、乐舞等有了依据直观感受构成画面的迹象，描绘了高视点俯瞰下的景物，形象有序地向上方发展，上下间距表示了远近关系。建筑和坐榻、几案、容器等用具的透视造型，也辅助性地制造出空间深度。某些物象的叠合与互掩，使三度空间更为可信。
与构图方式统一的形象塑造，具有影形观察和线描表达两个显著特点。物象的体积消失在剪影式的平面造 型中，以曲线为主的轮廓线强调了形象的形体与动态特 征。几乎所有的形象都处在行进、跳跃、流贯、顾盼、飞腾的运动瞬间。轮廓之内的线条加强了动势，也概括地增添细节，使形象较有个性状貌。
画像石的雕刻技法部分地促成图像存其大貌、拙胜 于工的特点。综合地看，主要有阴线刻、 平面浅浮雕、弧面浅浮雕、平面凹雕、高浮雕、透雕、阳线刻等。最普遍的是平面浅浮雕加阴线刻，即在平整的石面上刻去 形象轮廓之外的部分，使形象呈浅浮雕状，然后用阴线刻出轮廓内的细部。以此为基本方法，有的用线绘加彩 代替阴线刻，如陕北画像石；有的在背景刻出规则的线纹，如部分南阳画像石。阴线刻在早期较简单，到晚期和沂南画像石中熟练细腻，是南北朝、隋唐时期线刻风 格的雏型；高浮雕与透雕只用于少数作品。有的画像石局部敷染色彩，目的是强调某形象的功能。石料处理的 光洁度、雕刻的精细度之异，也形成了各地画像石不尽 相同的面貌。
