1962年5月：正式与伦敦EMI旗下的一家小公司Parlophone签下录音合同。自此，开始了以披头士为主角的摇滚乐“不列颠入侵”。
1964年：年底，披头士有30首歌曲列入该年“佳曲100首”行列，他们的三张专辑垄断专辑排行榜之首达30周之久。此后的五年中，几乎所有专辑都成为乐坛经典。
1968年：约翰遇见了纽约先锋艺术家小野洋子（YOKO ONO），之后和辛西娅的婚姻破裂，
1969年：约翰.列侬和小野洋子在直布罗陀结婚。
1970年：专辑《ABBEYROAD》（修道院之路）的发行引起乐队成员的分歧，约翰和保尔纷纷指责对方的妻子过分介入乐队的事务，从而引发口角乃至起诉，甲壳虫终于在70年代的第一年里分道扬镳，曲终人散。
70年代：约翰.列侬和小野洋子在纽约格林尼治村安家，继续音乐和艺术创作。
1980年12月8日晚，约翰在为洋子的歌曲《如履薄冰》配完吉它曲的回家路中，被一名疯狂的持枪者枪杀于自己曼哈顿公寓的门口。后来这名乐迷被警方抓获并被判终生居住在精神病院里。12月14日下午2点，全球的列侬乐迷集体为他致哀10分钟，他的意外身亡也使得“Double Fantasy”等唱片在全球的销量出现飙升。
在列侬死后的数年内，他的影响和声誉与日俱增。直到80年代中期，列侬生前没有发行的一些曲目陆续面市，他在1972年参加的一次慈善演出的录像也被很多乐迷进行了收藏。另外，为了纪念列侬，披头士乐队的几位创始成员还于1995年重新录制了70年代期流行的几首老歌，这末些歌曲后来都作为新歌登上了1996年的排行榜。
跨过2000年，“列侬热”重新兴起。大量有关这位文化偶像的书籍出版，其中比较著名的有Geoffrey Giuliano的《Lennon In America》、Robert Rosen的《Nowhere Man:The Final Days Of John Lennon》、《Lennon Remembers:The Full Rolling Stone Interviews From 1970》。可以说列侬和他的披头士乐队影响了整整一代人，并且将继续影响下去。
