endless interest. What does one live for? It might be the desire for status, the
lust for money, or simply the happy and long life run after by many. After all,
no one could tell exactly why he lives his life in this particular pattern, but
not another. And for Bertrand Russell, what has governed his life could be
classified into three passions: the longing for love, the search for knowledge
and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. All the three overwhelmingly
strong passions helped to form a reflection of Russell’s life.
By saying love, Russell does not confine its meaning into a very narrow
scope. He has sought love for ecstasy, for the relief of loneliness and for the
heavenly goodness. Love, in most people’s perspectives, is those strongly
earthshaking feelings towards someone they love, not for appearance, not for
wealth, regardless of age, regardless of gender, but simply for the one who is
himself worth the love. What is more about love is that it will never be
constrained between lovers; instead, it also exists between parents and
children, between siblings, between friends, even between total strangers. That
is what we call the instinct for love which humans are born with. Love could
surpass the barrier between regions and religions, get over disparities between
races and colours; it is love that everyone gives without thinking about taking;
it is love that beats loneliness, sorrow and hardship; it is also love that
fills the whole world with peace and warmth. Russell is right: a life which is
governed by love is surely a life worth living.
There must be someone who would put knowledge in front of everything. As I
coin the word, I call such a man “knowledgeaholic” and though Russell has not
been a “knowledgeaholic”, he still sought after it with equal passion. Nature
bestows upon us her beautiful but mysterious gifts in various ways and with
determined efforts we will one day definitely discover all that fascinates our
heart and puzzles our mind. The greatest men before have made out clear paths
for us to go along with, such as astronomy, biology, geography, meteorology and
psychology. Filled with love, armed with knowledge, one is surely invincible,
impregnable and unconquerable.
Most likely in Buddism, we can perceive its instructions of showing mercy or
pity for the poor, the oppressed and the helpless. It is the pity that has
brought Russell back to earth and he too suffered from his inability to pull
people under torture out of deep drowning water. The “one for all, all for one”
notion means its meaning and plays to the full with a kind and caring heart.
Pity could be considered as another kind of love, usually love between
strangers, which evolves into selfless benevolence the moment one witnesses the
sorrow and pain others are going through. Human life should have been full of
comfort and happiness, but what we have seen is a whole world of loneliness,
poverty and pain. And once mankind all possesses pity towards others, the world
will never stop caring for others. That is exactly what Russell wanted to
pursued throughout his life.
These are three passions in Bertrand Russell’s life. Love, knowledge and pity
support each other and complement each other. What have I lived for? I might as
well start to think about this question because I hope when I look back to my
whole life at different ages, I will not regret any of my decisions and sigh
bitterly for what I could have done better
