终身体育是指一个人终身进行体育锻炼和接受体育指导及教育。它包含的内容有两个方面：一个是指从生命开始至生命结束，一生中学习与参加体育锻炼，使体育健身真正成为人一生中不可或缺的内容。二是指在终身体育思想的指导下，以体育的系统化、整体化为目标，在不同时期参加体育活动的实践过程。高校是培养德智体全面发展的人才场所，其体育教育对形成终身体育思想占有非常重要的地位，它可以为终身体育打下良好的基础。使学生培养学生在学习体育知识、技能的最后阶段自觉地养成经常参加体育锻炼的习惯，学会和掌握终身进行体育锻炼的方法和手段，为大学生毕业后进行终身自我锻炼创造一定的先决条件。那么，从哪些方面着手才能达到这样的效果呢？从哪些教育入手才能使学校实现如此目的呢？本文就这一问题略谈己见，仅供参考。
　　一、增加体育开课所限和时数
　　在大学进行终身体育教育，首先要保持学生的练习时间，提高课时数。在时间上保证学生终身体育能力与习惯的培养。要保证学生在大学阶段保持锻炼身体的完整性的终身性，仅靠两年的体育课是不行的。所以各院校可根据本校的情况调整体育课的开课年限，四年制的院校可开四年，三年制的院校可开三年等。另外，根据人体解剖学、运动生理学理论和运动技能的形成规律，每周两学时体育课对机体刺激作用小，甚至很快消失，只有经常地，有一定负荷的刺激，才能对机体产生良好的作用。增加体育课开课的年限和时数，不仅使大学生在校期间得到很好锻炼，而且具有了体育意识的大学生离校后仍能坚持不懈地进行体育锻炼。所以，培养大学生终身的体育意识与能力，对指导毕业后的锻炼具有特殊的作用。
　　二、加强理论教学
　　体育教学是学校教育的组成部分，与其他学科一样，也是一门学科而独立存在的。作为一门研究身体生长、发育、健康、长寿的学科其理论内容的深度和广度是不言而喻的。这就要求高校的体育教学必须把体育理论教育提到应有的位置，改变过去把体育理论教学作为风雨教材，可有可无的错误认识和做法，加强理论教学的先材，使理论教学内容在其系统性、知识性、深度和广度上得到充分保证，使学生通过对理论的学习，做到对体育知其然又知其所以然。
　　（一）理论教材的选择应全面、有针对性
　　教材是理论教学的教科书，是执行理论教学必备的基础条件。教材的选择，应在中学体育教育的基础上，使其更加具备系统性、连续性和知识性，作为受过高等教育的大学生，不仅要明确体育能够增强体质，还要明确体育怎样增强体质，既要懂得锻炼可以提高运动技能，更要懂得怎样锻炼才能提高运动技能等一系列科学锻炼身体的方法。这样的教学安排，其广泛的知识性对解决大学生的终身体育教育是可以起着积极的理论引导作用的。
　　（二）加强理论考试的监督管理
　　理论考试是检验理论教学效果的基本手段，是一项非常严肃认真的工作，所以必须认真对待，如果开卷考试，或考场不正规，都会给理论考试带来不良后果，因此，各省市可以根据本地的教材内容，设置几套题库，并在省市有关部门的监督下，定期进行统考检查，以更引起整个学校对体育考试的重视。使理论教学得到较好地完成。
　　三、继续加大开设体育选项课的力度
　　目前，高校体育选项课已经得到了大学生的喜爱，大多数同学所选的项目能引起自己的学习兴趣。但是，并不是所有学校的选项都能让学生选到自己的爱好和感兴趣的项目，特别是在一些小学校，由于受场地、器材和师资等条件的限制，只能提供几个项目供学生选，很多学生对其中的项目不感兴趣，或都不具备该项目所要求的身体素质，结果是硬着头皮上课，学生学起来费劲，教师也觉得十分疲劳，所以，凡是开选项课的学校，都应该充分考虑到学生的兴趣和特点，挖掘学校潜在的条件，扩大投资、改善教学环境。让所有选项课的学生能选到自己最满意的项目。同时，还应加强选项课的师资队伍建设，让所有的选项课都有该项专长的教师来任教，充分发挥教师的一技之长。使选项课的教与学双方都能感到满意。
　　选项课的项目应做到竞技体育项目与传统体育项目相结合。竞技体育项目对人的影响与非竞技项目所产生的影响是不同的。竞技体育项目可以影响人的乐观、自信、敢于竞争、要完善自我和超越自我等现代人应具备的精神意志和品德，它的竞争性、趣味性符合现代大学生的个性需求，深受大学生的欢迎。传统体育项目是我国优秀的文化遗产，是劳动人民在长期实践中总结出来的精神。大学生选择传统体育项目为自己的运动项目，不仅能强身健体，而且能激发他们爱我中华民族热情，特别是那些上保健课的大学生更适合选择一些如气功、武术、太极拳等有保健强身健体作用的一些符合地方条件的和大学生特点的运动项目，这些传统项目的介入，会大大增加学生们的选择范围。
　　四、全民健身运动的深入对高校的体育教育提出了更高的要求
　　全民运动的实施标志着社会的巨大进步，广大群众有了积极参与体育健身的热情。但是由于多数人没有受到过高等体育教育，他们对体育健身的知识与要求还处于一知半解或盲目状态，甚至不知健身从何处着手。这样作为受过高等教育的大学毕业生，完全可以担当起全民健身运动的辅导员和小先生，将他们在学校所学到的健身知识和方法传授于广大人民群众。在这个过程中，既可以使本人的终身体育能力得到完善，又会使全民健身计划在各行各业得到较好的落实。这种头雁的作用，正是大学生在校体育教育的继续发展和提高。所有大学生都应进行体育运动实践，裁判实践和组织竞赛实践等则将成为高校体育教育的一个新的重要任务。随着全民健身运动的不断深入，大学毕业生肩负着推动全民健身运动的作用将会越来越明显地表现出来。
　　五、结束语
　　总之，高校体育是体育教育的最后一站，其教学效果，教学质量，学生对体育的认识，不仅仅是在校锻炼起着决定性的指导作用。所以，我们高等学校的广大体育工作者应该着眼未来着眼二十一世纪，从多方面为大学生毕业后步入社会进行自我锻炼打好基础，并且不断地培养大学生的体育意识，使他们既能自己参加锻炼，又能辅导他人锻炼，既能参加各种比赛，又具备组织比赛的各种能力。让所有的大学生在校牢固的打上终身体育意识的烙印，毕业之后成为全民健身运动的先行者和排头兵。
