早年】唐太宗于开皇十八年（599年）在出生，是唐高祖李渊与窦皇后的次子。公元614年娶妻长孙氏，（登基后称长孙皇后）。公元617年，李世民逼父亲起兵反隋，攻入长安，并且灭隋。李世民被封为秦王。此后，李世民经常出征，逐步消灭各地割据势力。自武德元年起，秦王李世民亲自指挥了三场大战役：一、破李轨，平定陇西割据势力薛仁杲（薛举之子），铲除了唐王朝来自西北方面的威胁；二、败宋金刚、刘武周，收复并、汾失地，巩固唐王朝的大后方；三、在虎牢之战中，一举翦灭中原两大割据势力——王世充和窦建德军事集团，取得了唐代统一战争决定性的胜利。李世民自此威望日隆，尤其是在虎牢之战后进入长安时，受到部分军民以皇帝的礼仪招待。武德四年冬十月，封为天策上将、领司徒、陜东道大行台尚书令，食邑增至二万户。高祖又下诏特许天策府自置官属，俨然形成一个小政府机构。
【玄武门之变】此后，李世民与自己的哥哥太子李建成，四弟齐王李元吉的猜忌日益加深。大臣间互相倾轧，分为两派。宰相裴寂、谋士王圭、魏征、东宫卫士将领薛万彻等跟随李建成、李元吉为一派，谋士杜如晦、房玄龄，将领秦叔宝、尉迟敬德、段志玄、王君廓等跟随李世民为一派。大臣长孙无忌等暗中支持李世民。将领李靖、徐世勣、大臣宇文士及等保持中立。公元626年，李世民在长安城宫城玄武门发动“玄武门之变”，李建成、李元吉被杀，而后来高祖让位，他即位为帝，次年改年号为贞观。
【贞观之治】在李世民统治其间，唐朝国力强盛，被称为贞观之治。晚年著《帝范》一书以教戒太子，其中总结了他一生的政治经验，也对自己的功过进行了评述。
他在位期间，推行府兵制、租庸调制和均田制，并积极推行科举制。
630年，击败东 突 厥，被尊为“天可汗”。641年嫁文成公主给吐蕃的松赞干布。
公元649年，唐太宗得了痢疾，医治最终无效，命太子李治到金液门代理国事。李世民于649年7月病死于长安含风殿。葬于今中国陕西礼泉县东北50多里的山峰上的昭陵。谥号为“文皇帝”。
唐太宗善于听从大臣的批评和见解，魏征直谏200多次直陈他的过失。
唐太宗还精擅书法，以行书写碑，为后世鼻祖。著名作品有《温泉铭》、《晋祠铭》等。死后更以东晋书法大家,王羲之所作兰亭集序为陪葬品。
【修改历史疑云】终李世民一生，都担心日后史家如何评论“玄武门之变”，于是曾多次向史官要求阅读《起居注》和《实录》，打破历代皇帝不可阅读的先例。虽史书记载李世民要求“削去浮，直书其事”，但已引来种种推想并举证，认为李世民曾修改两书。
唐太宗李世民（公元598年1月28日 【一说599年1月23日 】－公元649年7月10日），祖籍陇西成纪，是唐高祖李渊和窦皇后的次子，唐朝第二位皇帝。
李世民少年从军，曾去雁门关营救隋炀帝。唐朝建立后，李世民官居尚书令、右武候大将军，受封为秦国公，后晋封为秦王，先后率部平定了薛仁杲、刘武周、窦建德、王世充等军阀，在唐朝的建立与统一过程中立下赫赫战功。
武德九年（公元626年），李世民发动玄武门之变，杀死自己的兄长太子李建成、四弟齐王李元吉及二人诸子，被立为太子。唐高祖李渊不久被迫退位，李世民即位，年号贞观。
李世民为帝之后，积极听取群臣的意见，以文治天下，并开疆拓土，虚心纳谏，在国内厉行节约，并使百姓能够休养生息，终于使得社会出现了国泰民安的局面，开创了中国历史上著名的贞观之治，为后来唐朝一百多年的盛世奠定重要基础。公元649年7月10日（贞观二十三年五月己巳日），唐太宗李世民因病驾崩于含风殿，享年五十二岁，在位二十三年，庙号太宗，葬于昭陵。李世民爱好文学与书法，有墨宝传世。
为政举措：
1.任用人才
李世民即帝位不久，按秦王府文学馆的模式，新设弘文馆，进一步储备天下文才。
2.从谏如流
李世民以隋炀帝拒谏亡国为戒，即位后尽力求言，他把谏官的权力扩大，又鼓励群臣批评他的决策和风格。
3.完善制度
李世民在位期间使隋制更趋于完善。如中央朝廷方面延续了三省六部制，特设政事堂，以利合议问政，并收三省互相牵制之效；地方上沿袭了隋代的郡县两级制，分全国为十个监区（道）。此外，行府兵制，寓兵于农；均田制、租庸调制、科举制等皆有所发展。
4.河清海晏
贞观时期在李世民的治理下，社会夜不闭户，道不拾遗。
唐太宗李世民的文治武功，自古就为人所津律乐道，颂扬备至。学界对他的雄才伟略和他对中国历史所作出的重大贡献都给予积极的肯定。李世民是一位有作为的政治家和军事家，在反隋建唐的斗争中起着领导作用，唐太宗玄武门之变的胜利，在客观上对唐初社会历史的发展起着积极作用。唐太宗不歧视少数民族，除对突厥的侵扰用兵外，主要是采用怀柔的政治手段处理民族问题，方法妥当，政策开明，有利于民族的团结和国家的统一。
