在荒芜的乱石山上有一只虎精和一头狼怪，他们想霸占荷花湾，强娶荷花女。荷花女坚决不屈从，宁嫁穷书生。于是，她吹响了宝笛，驱走了虎狼。然荷花湾已被糟蹋得不成样子，湖水干枯了，荷花枯萎了。
荷花女为了拯救姐妹们，她日以继夜地用藕丝赶织绿绸，在老渔翁等协助下，终于把清泉引下了山，荷花湾回复了一片生机。
大郎娶了妻子成了家，开始还比较满足，但渐渐地感到村野生活平淡，无大作为，决意赴京去赶考，以求荣华富贵。虽经荷花女婉言相劝，他还是执意要去。临别，荷花女将宝笛相赠于他。
虎精、狼怪得知大郎怀藏宝笛，上京赶考，便摇身一变为老妪和哑院公，把他骗进洞府，又指使蛇妖化成美女，用金樽盛酒，银碟盛菜，以上宾相待。大郎被这豪华的客厅，多情的小姐，看的眼花缭乱，不能自主，虽再三清醒，最后还是被虎狼夺去了宝笛，毒瞎了眼睛。
荷花女得知大郎遭害，不顾水恶山险，到茫苍的丛林中遍找丈夫，在风神的相助下，她刚把大郎从岩石下救出来。不料蛇妖又追踪而至，由于大郎经不起百般引诱，终于陷入了虎狼之口丧失了生命。
荷花女将大郎的衣服埋在荷花湾边，不久，从土中长出一棵含羞草来，永远羞愧于世人。
