中国人民解放军第十次换装新中国成立后，从统一全军服装开始，先后经历了10次改革，其中变动较大的有6次。
1950年，经中央军委批准，统一了全军的军服制式和供给标准，样式分为干部、战士、男女。单衣，干部为开襟式，战士为套头式。女军人为连衣裙，均戴大檐帽。用料为棉平纹布。颜色，陆军为绿色，海军单衣为上白下蓝色、棉衣为蓝色，空军为上绿下蓝色。佩戴“八一”五星帽徽和“中国人民解放军”胸章。
1955年实行军衔制时，参照苏军服装样式，对全军军服进行了全面改革。全军军官和士兵配发常服，校以上军官配发礼服。常服样式，男军官为立翻领四个挖袋，西式裤，夏季戴大檐帽(1958年加发解放帽)，冬季戴栽绒帽，男士兵为立翻领两个上挖袋，西式裤，夏季戴船形帽(1958年改戴解放帽)，冬季戴栽绒帽。海军士兵为披肩领套头式，裤子旁开口。女军人夏服为小翻领两个挖袋，戴无檐软帽。
颜色，陆军为棕绿色，海军夏服为上白下蓝色、冬服藏蓝色，空军为上棕绿色下藏蓝色。军官佩戴肩领章，士兵佩戴领章，官兵均佩戴军兵种符号和圆形“八一”五星帽徽。校尉官扎武装带。
60年代初期，针对冬季只有棉衣，夏季只有单衣，脱了棉衣换单衣，不利随气候调节的问题进行了研究。在小改变制式的原则下，对冬服的结构配套进行了改革。用罩衣、紧身棉衣、绒衣和衬裤取代老式棉衣，并普遍配发了大衣，较好地解决了服装换季问题，提高了军服的卫生性能。
1968年，全军军服就化纤材料用于军服问题进行了专题研究与试验，从1971年开始，逐步将单衣、罩衣和大衣用料改为涤棉混纺织物，提高了军服的质量。
1985年，全军换发了“八五”式服装，与原来服装相比，主要变化是：干部、战士配发了制式衬衣、大檐帽，圆形“八一”五星帽徽和军种肩领章。冬服、夏服、大衣，军以上干部改用纯毛料制作，师团干部改用混纺毛料制作。
1987年，87式服装改革区别于我军历史上任何一次军服改革。建立了礼服、常服、作训服系列，较好地解决了军人执行不同任务着穿不同服装问题。
87式服装，官兵夏常服、女军人冬常服都由立领改为开领，士兵常服由两个口袋改为4个口袋，官兵着夏常服时配衬衣扎领带。作训服、迷彩服样式新颖，有时代感。大衣、衬衣、军帽、军鞋等也作了相应改进，都有较大创新。尉官常服、士官夏常服用料由涤棉布改为混纺毛料。军官的硬肩章，官兵的软肩章，其样式威严、庄重、大方，衔级标志清晰，区分明显。军种符号设计简明新颖，便于区分，缀钉也较方便。大帽徽加设松枝叶和天安门图案，象征明显，寓意深刻。文职干部的肩章、符号，军官礼服的领花，大檐帽的饰带等，都与87式服装相匹配。
