萨兰教授还指出，马荣溪地区也发现了一些八目鳗化石，但它们和塔利怪兽化石并不相像。2016年的另一项研究称，塔利怪兽眼部的扫描电子显微镜图片显示，其眼部存在负责产生和储存黑色素的黑素体结构。论文作者认为，该生物眼部的复杂结构说明，它很可能是一种脊椎动物。
自从58年前发现化石以来，科学家就深受其困扰。人们无法确定它究竟是软体动物，还是与鱼类有关。
但萨兰教授指出，除了脊椎动物之外，节肢动物和头足纲动物也有着复杂的眼部结构，“眼部经历了十多次重要进化，”萨兰教授说道，“不难想象塔利怪兽也能进化出类似脊椎动物的眼睛。”萨兰教授和同事对塔利怪兽的眼睛展开分析后认为，该生物其实长了所谓的杯形眼，缺乏晶状体，眼部结构较为简单，“因此，如果该生物的确长了杯形眼，它就不可能是脊椎动物，因为脊椎动物要么眼部结构更为复杂，要么就退而求其次、让眼睛退化掉了。但杯形眼在其它生物身上很普遍，如原始脊索动物、软体动物和某些蠕虫等。”
萨兰教授在报告中指出，在他们检查的1000多份的塔利怪兽化石样本中，没有一份具有水生脊椎动物普遍拥有的身体结构。如帮助动物平衡身体的耳部结构耳囊（otic capsules），帮助鱼类定向的侧线系统（lateral line）等。“我们本来认为，至少一部分塔利怪兽具备这些结构，”萨兰教授指出，“然而，它们不仅没有脊椎动物应有的身体结构，还长有一些绝不属于脊椎动物的器官。”
研究人员称，若对这种不同寻常的物种进行了错误归类，将使整个进化研究领域遭受不利影响。“这样的错误判断会妨碍我们理解脊椎动物的进化过程和某段时期内脊椎动物的多样化程度。”萨兰教授表示，“受到这样的异常值干扰，我们就更难确定生物针对生态系统做出了哪些改变了。”
当然，除了塔利怪兽之外，还有许多无法归类的生物化石。但如果要做出石破天惊的发现，就必须掌握确凿无疑的证据。至于塔利怪兽的真实身份，萨兰教授称目前仍无定论。
