这是教师最明显、最直接、最富时代性的角色特征，是教师角色中的核心特征。其内涵主要包括以下两个方面：第一，教师是学生学习能力的培养者。教师不仅传授知识，而且重在检查学生对知识的掌握程度。教师应成为学生学习的激发者、各种能力和积极个性的培养者；第二，教师是学生人生的引路人。这要求教师不仅仅向学生传播知识，更要引导学生沿着正确的道路前进，并不断在他们成长的道路上设置不同的路标，成为学生健康心理和健康品德形成的促进者、催化剂，引导学生学会自我调适、自我选择，引导学生向更高的目标前进。
(二)从教学与研究的关系看，教师是教育教学的研究者
在中小学教师的职业生涯中，传统的教学活动和研究活动是彼此分离的。教师的任务只是教学，研究被认为是讲师们的“专利”。这种教学与研究的脱节，对教师和教学的发展是极其不利的。
教师即研究者，意味着教师在教学过程中要以研究者的心态置身于教学情境之中，以研究者的眼光审视和分析教学理论与教学实践中的各种问题，对自身的行为进行反思，对出现的问题进行探究，对积累的经验进行总结，最终形成规律性的认识。
(三)从教学与课程的关系看，教师是课程的开发者和建设者
