天左右，黄体萎缩，停止分泌雌激素和孕激素，此时子宫内膜中的血管收缩，内膜坏死而脱落，引起出血，形成月经。
正常月经周期血液内激素的变化与卵巢、子宫内膜的关系如下：在前一月经周期黄体萎缩后，雌激素和孕激素的分泌量随之下降，解除了对下丘脑及垂体的抑制。下丘脑产生的促性腺激素释放激素通过垂体门静脉系统进入垂体前叶，促使促卵泡激素和促黄体生成激素的分泌及释放。在促卵泡激素和促黄体生成激素的协同作用下，卵巢中卵泡逐渐发育成熟，并产生雌激素，使子宫内膜发生增生期变化。卵泡发育成熟后，体内雌激素出现第一个高峰。
雌激素分泌量增多，对下丘脑、垂体产生反馈作用，抑制促卵泡激素的产生，促进促黄体生成激素分泌增多，出现促黄体生成激素峰，触发了排卵。排卵后黄体形成，分泌雌激素和孕激素，在它们的共同作用下，子宫内膜发生典型的分泌期变化。排卵后，雌激素水平暂时降低，随后又出现第二个较低的高峰。
女性排卵后次日,因卵巢形成黄体,黄体分泌孕酮会使体温上升摄氏0.6度左右,而使体温呈现高低两相变化.高温期约持续12-16天(平均14天).若无怀孕,黄体萎缩停止分泌孕酮,体温下降,回到基本线,月经来潮.若是已经怀孕,因黄体受到胚胎分泌荷尔蒙支持,继续分泌孕酮,体温持续高温.若卵巢功能不良,没有排卵也没有黄体形成,所以体温将持续低温.
女性月经周期以月经见红第一天为周期的开始,周期的长短因人而异,约为21-35天不等,平均约为28天,其中以排卵日为分隔,排卵前为卵泡期,排卵后为黄体期.卵泡期长短不一定,但正常的黄体期固定约为14天上下两天.
一般卵泡期基础体温为36.5℃，黄体期上升0.5℃以上，因而出现双相表现，表示有排卵，若单相型无后期升高的体温曲线，提示无排卵，其准确率为70%~80%。

青春期后卵巢在下丘脑一垂体所分泌的促性腺激素的刺激下逐渐发育。在垂体促卵泡激素的作用下卵泡逐渐生长，发育成熟，并分泌大量的雌激素，在雌激素的作用下子宫内膜增生变厚，呈增殖期变化。
在黄体生成激素的作用下，成熟的卵泡破裂排出卵子，排卵后卵泡形成黄体，黄体细胞分泌孕激素，在雌、孕激素的共同作用下，子宫内膜进一步增殖，并由于其腺体上皮细胞分泌而呈现分泌期变化。
若卵子未受精，黄体即开始萎缩，一般黄体的寿命平均为14天。黄体萎缩后，卵巢雌、孕激素水平迅速下降，使子宫内膜失去支持而萎缩，且由于缺血坏死而脱落，于是出现阴道出血，即通常所说的月经来潮
