南岭地区成矿作用的历史演化悠久，成矿时代从中元古代至新生代第四纪均发生，但主要集中在燕山期（王登红等，2010）。不同学者对南岭地区钨锡多金属矿成矿时限有不同的认识，测年精度也给成矿时限的划分带来一定的影响。尽管如此，对华南地区中生代成岩成矿作用的研究已经取得重要进展。华仁民等（2005b）和毛景文等（2004，2007，2008）分别概括总结了华南地区大规模成矿作用时限。毛景文等（2004）认为华南金属矿床成矿作用主要集中在170～150 Ma，140～126 Ma和110～80 Ma；而华仁民等（2005b）提出华南地区中生代发生了三次大规模成矿作用，分别是燕山期早期180～170 Ma，燕山期中期170～139 Ma和燕山期晚期125～98 Ma。毛景文等（2008）基于近几年的高精度成岩成矿测年资料，总结提出华南地区中生代主要金属矿床出现于三个阶段：晚三叠世（230～210 Ma）、中晚中侏罗世（170～150 Ma，钨锡成矿主要集中在160～150 Ma）和早中白垩世（134～80 Ma）。Huang等（2011）统计分析了赣南地区钨钼矿床的辉钼矿Re-Os同位素年龄，认为钨锡成矿作用要比独立的钼成矿作用复杂，钨锡矿床中伴生的钼成矿作用持续时间明显更长，并将赣南燕山期钼成矿作用划分为三个时间段，即133～135 Ma，150～162 Ma和166～170 Ma（Huang et al.，2011）。
赣南钼成矿作用主要集中在150～162 Ma，与南岭地区钨锡大规模成矿作用爆发时限（毛景文等，2007；丰成友等，2010a）基本一致，辉钼矿主要以伴生形式出现，目前只有园岭寨钼矿为独立的大型钼矿。而大规模钨锡成矿作用前后均出现独立的钼成矿作用（铜坑嶂钼矿133～135 Ma和新安钼矿166～170 Ma），并且存在135～146 Ma和162～166 Ma两个时间段的钼成矿作用空白或弱矿化段，预示着本区不仅在中侏罗世中晚期有巨大的找矿前景，在白垩纪和中侏罗世早期钼成矿作用同样存在有潜力。
最近报道显示，在武夷山南段发育有大量的钼矿床（点），如福建西南地区的北坑场钼多金属矿、永定山口钼矿、行洛坑钨钼矿、武平地区的石英脉型钼多金属矿（小坑、米筛畲、牛头窝、上排）和云英岩型钼钨矿（苏茅坪、下坝钨钼铋、佳塘下、鸡公山）等钼矿床（点）以及赣东南地区的葛廷坑钼矿、南迳隘钼矿等钼矿床（点）暗示本区具有有利钼成矿构造-岩浆活动和物理化学环境。从成矿系列角度来讲，本区属南岭与燕山期中浅成花岗类有关的REE、稀有、有色金属及U矿床成矿系列中的赣南-粤北-闽西与燕山期花岗岩有关的W，REE，Nb，Ta，Mo，Bi，Pb，Zn，萤石矿床成矿亚系列（王登红等，2010），根据成矿系列的“全位成矿缺位找矿”的理论（王登红等，2011），本区Mo，Pb，Zn都应作为进一步找矿勘查的重点。据寻乌幅1∶20 万矿产图资料显示，除园岭寨钼矿、葛廷坑钼矿、铜坑嶂钼矿、南迳隘钼矿点外区内还分布着众多铅锌矿点，这为本区铅锌矿的查找提供了工作依据。
