派克呼叫医生到他仓房，派克对医生说他以厌倦了星舰的生活，想辞职回家，但医生反对。此时舰桥报告有11名生还者在塔罗斯IV上，于是舰长回到舰桥命令进取号前去救援。
抵达后，舰长带领六人登陆小队传送到行星表面，发现从坠毁的调查船 SS 哥伦比亚上幸存的科学家。 一个美丽的年轻女子接近他们。 她是维娜 ，迫降在这个星球上后她母亲在临死前生下了她。
