西方园林则表现为开朗、活泼、规则、整齐、豪华、热烈、激情，有时甚至是不顾奢侈地讲究排场。从古希腊哲学家就推崇“秩序是美的”，他们认为野生大自然是未经驯化的，充分体现人工造型的植物形式才是美的，所以植物形态都修剪成规整几何形式，园林中的道路都是整齐笔直的。海神、农神、酒神、花神、阿波罗、丘比特、维纳斯以及山林水泽等到华丽的雕塑喷泉，放置在轴线交点的广场上，园林景观艺术主题是有神论的“人体美”。西方古典园林的创作主导思想是以人为自然界的中心，大自然必须按照人的头脑中的秩序、规则、条理、模式来进行改造，讲求的是一览无余，追求图案的美，人工的美，改造的美和征服的美，是一种开放式的园林。
