中国原始雕塑的最初形态是陶制品，它与其实用价值密不可分。一是以动物外形为器皿，如仰韶文化遗址出土的陶质鹰鼎，高36厘米，以鹰身为鼎体、以二足为3个支点，器形饱满，为此类雕塑与器皿完美结合的代表作品之一；二是装饰部分的雕塑，题材有动物、植物、人物等等。甘肃大地湾出土的陶瓶人头像，可谓中国早期人物雕塑的开端。作者巧妙地将陶瓶的口部塑成一个人头像，制作细腻，形象生动；三是小型动物或人物捏塑，这种小雕塑都是古代工匠不假任何工具而信手捏制的，形体小巧，带有浓厚的人情味。浙江河姆渡文化遗址出土的陶塑猪可能是我国江南地区最古老的雕塑作品，距今有7000年了。尽管作品只有6.3厘米大，可它的形象却非常生动，可见雕塑者对生活观察之细腻。
商、周时期的青铜器是公元前21—前17世纪的河南二里头文化现象。与原始陶塑的性质一样，商、周时代的青铜器也并非实际意义上的雕塑，而是用于祭祀、生活、乐器、兵器、工具等方面的实用器物。有历史学家将夏、商、周称为青铜时代。这些大量的青铜器为奴隶主所占有，也是某种统治、权威、财富的象征。
秦代在雕塑方面有重大发展，最引人注目的就是大型陶兵马俑和铜车马。秦始皇吞并六国以后，建立秦王朝，统一货币、文字、度量衡等。秦代的雕塑题材更加贴近生活，从功能上看，也逐步走向独立。秦代承袭了春秋战国的朴实，作品趋于写实。秦汉时期的总体雕塑风格比较恢宏，强调力度和气势。
汉代是中国封建社会中最具魄力的一个时期。如西汉霍去病墓，至今还存有一批杰出的石雕艺术作品，它们是为纪念西汉名将霍去病而创作制造的。马踏匈奴高190厘米，作者用隐喻的手法，借战马的形象来体现霍去病的威猛和战功卓著，充分体现出纪念性雕塑的概括性。整个雕塑浑然一体，四肢之间没留空间，增强了体、量的沉重感。
三国、两晋、南北朝时期，我国的雕塑艺术全面发展。佛教的盛行促使佛像艺术蓬勃发展，改变了中国雕塑史的面貌，人物雕塑更加成熟。
佛像艺术的第一种为石窟形式，甘肃的敦煌石窟、炳灵寺石窟、新疆拜城克孜尔石窟等等，都有明确的年号题记；一路开凿的还有甘肃天水麦积山石窟、张掖马蹄寺石窟、宁夏固原须弥山石窟、山西大同云岗石窟、河南洛阳龙门石窟、河北邯郸南北响堂山石窟、江苏南京栖霞山石窟等等。
隋代又恢复了中央集权，曾在短期内出现了农、工、商繁荣富强的局面。佛教依然为思想统治的主要工具，统治者大力恢复被北周武帝毁坏的佛寺和雕像。主要成就集中在石窟造像上，其中最有代表性的是敦煌莫高窟、麦积山石窟、济南玉函山石窟等处。其造型上的主要特点是，普遍较前代更为健硕，体态丰满。但这一时期的另一个特点——也可以说是弱点，就是比例上的失衡，一些作品明显的在结构和比例上不够合理，如莫高窟的427库的隋代菩萨像，头颅显大。这是一个过渡性发展时期，我国的雕塑艺术由隋代拉开了更加灿烂的序幕。
唐代的雕塑艺术，主要体现于宗教造像、陵墓随葬。但这一时期，随着工艺技术之发展，在材料运用上更加丰富，除石雕、木雕、陶瓷外，还大量使用夹苎、铸铜等工艺材料。
初唐前期的雕塑风格，基本上还残留着前代（北朝及隋代）的痕迹。初唐后期就开始出现兴盛的征兆，但对女性的塑造仍不及盛唐时那么活泼动人。社会经济的蓬勃发展，促使人们的宗教观念也发生了变化。盛唐时的整体社会面貌比较乐观豁达，佛教艺术也出现世俗化倾向，绘画、雕塑中的人物形象接近于现实生活中的形象。
唐代的佛教造像数量非常之大，主要还体现在石窟、摩崖石刻方面。现存的遗迹多集中于新疆克孜尔石窟、甘肃敦煌莫高窟、天水麦积山、山西天龙山石窟、陕西彬县大佛寺、河北响堂山石窟、河南龙门石窟、山东云门山石窟、四川广元千佛崖、乐山摩崖石刻、云南剑川石窟等等。
其中规模最大、艺术特点最明显者，首推敦煌。唐代时期所开凿的窟龛，占全部敦煌石窟的半数。所塑造的菩萨造像，从形象上和装扮上，基本上依据当时美人的典型形象，其坐姿出现了一腿盘起、一腿下垂的半倚坐式。世俗化的美丽已打破了宗教禁锢的气氛，更为强调艺术效果，似与参拜者对话。我们可以把同时代著名人物画家张萱、周昉等人的作品与之相比，可以看出它们之间有着异曲同工之妙，而在体态比例上、仪表外形上更加具有活力。比之于前代宗教雕塑艺术的肃穆与出世，唐代的佛教造像很好地把理想与现实相结合，既有博大凝重的一面，又有典雅鲜活的一面；既又威武有力的一面，也有柔和细腻的一面。唐代的人物雕塑也很注意人物性格，尤其是在处理群雕的人物关系时，很好地把握了人物之间的内在情感交流。比如佛主与弟子迦叶、阿难三者的塑造，就有多种形象变化，两个人物一老一少，一个是汉族人形象，一个是印度人形象，尽管都表露出虔诚的神态，但仍可以看出他们的心情之不同。再比如护法力士像，其职司决定了他们强力威武的形象，面部表情激烈、四肢肌肉发达，更加衬托出菩萨的慈祥。不同性格的人物塑像是群雕人物关系动静结合，突出中心，符合了雕塑美的形式法则。
宋、辽、金的历史阶段，雕塑艺术出现了不同于前代的风格现象，也产生了一些较有影响的作品，但从总体上看，不如汉唐时期，在整个中国雕塑艺术史上不占重要地位。
与宋代的绘画艺术相比，其雕塑艺术的成就要远远落后了，这与统治者的好恶与重视程度有很大关系。通过类似科举制选拔的宫廷画家，都有较高的修为，而雕塑行业的从业人员却得不到重视，甚至还受到歧视。随着文人画的兴起，雕塑艺人的社会地位愈加卑下，此类造型艺术走向衰退就不足为怪了。
北宋从一开始就不断受到外族侵扰，几乎没什么心思像唐代那样进行较大规模的石窟建造。有一些规模不大的石窟遗留下来，如延安清凉山万佛洞石窟，北宋范仲淹曾有诗对其记录。再如子长县石空寺石窟，从造像题记上看，其开凿年代当在北宋，最优秀的部分在于罗汉群像，姿态各异，形神兼备。四川大足石刻中属宋代的，为数不少，比较有代表性的是宝顶山的窟龛群。它利用自然山体，顺崖壁开凿，工程浩大，内容复杂。最为重要的部分是西方极乐世界，人物众多，场面繁杂，但层次分明，描写细致。与之相邻的是地狱变相，逼真地表现除受刑者在地狱中的惨状，并以写实的雕刻手法再现了种种日常生活的场景。这些石刻雕凿于距地面4—14米的峭壁上，总长度500余米，前后施工了几十年，雕塑之间关系密切、相互连接。整个布局高大而完整，雕刻技法娴熟，细节刻画生动，如地狱变相中的一个养鸡妇女形象，完全是依据现实生活而创作的。大足石刻的另外一个重要组成部分是硬盘坡、观音坡、佛耳岩、北塔寺等处。整个开凿历时250余年。应该引起重视的还有那些为数很多的供养人造像，均有题记以示他们的身份、地位和刻制年代，这是研究宋史难得的实物资料。浙江杭州的飞来峰也有比较集中的宋代雕刻，虽然尺寸不大，但其艺术水平却在宋代雕刻中占比较重要的地位。
明代文化艺术特点则明显有追溯唐、宋风格的痕迹。在名目繁多的寺庙里，供奉着各式各样的神像，从题材到表现手法上日趋世俗化、民间化。石窟雕刻方面已接近尾声，虽然在敦煌等大型历史悠久的石窟中仍有明代作品，但就其艺术价值而言，已不能为雕塑史一提了。十三陵现在已成为北京地区著名的旅游景点，位于昌平县境内，它是明代13位皇帝的陵墓集中区。
十三陵是以成祖长陵为中心线排列的雕塑群，与孝陵一致，但与前代有所不同。计有独角兽2对、石狮2对、华表2对、石马及石人物6对、石虎4对、石羊4对、官吏2对、伺臣28对，这条神道现为十三陵共同的神道，其他12座墓陵没有各自的神道雕塑，只设牌坊、宫门、碑亭等建筑。十三陵的石雕在体积上大于孝陵，从总体风格上看，虽有比较精细的技术处理，但与前代比较起来，缺乏艺术活力，有概念化的倾向。
在整个中国雕塑史上，清代的陵墓雕塑已经是尾声了。
清代的城市工商经济进一步纵向繁荣，手工业技术得到很大发展，工艺性雕塑艺术也得到了空前的重视。宫廷设立专门机构，督促、组织生产，雕漆、石雕、牙雕、木雕以及瓷塑、金属铸造等艺术门类都有一些优秀闻世，并出现了很多优秀的雕刻名家。
