屈原（公元前340年－公元前278年），战国时期楚国诗人、政治家。芈姓，屈氏，名平，字原；又自云名正则，字灵均 。约公元前340年出生于楚国丹阳（今湖北秭归），楚武王熊通之子屈瑕的后代。
屈原是中国历史上第一位伟大的爱国诗人，中国浪漫主义文学的奠基人，被誉为“中华诗祖”、“辞赋之祖”。他是“楚辞”的创立者和代表作者，开辟了“香草美人”的传统。屈原的出现，标志着中国诗歌进入了一个由集体歌唱到个人独创的新时代。他被后人称为“诗魂"。
屈原也是楚国重要的政治家，早年受楚怀王信任，任左徒、三闾大夫，兼管内政外交大事。 吴起之后，在楚国另一个主张变法的就是屈原 。他提倡“美政”，主张对内举贤任能，修明法度，对外力主联齐抗秦。因遭贵族排挤毁谤，被先后流放至汉北和沅湘流域 。
公元前278年，秦将白起攻破楚都郢（今湖北江陵），屈原悲愤交加，怀石自沉于汨罗江，以身殉国。1953年是屈原逝世2230周年，世界和平理事会通过决议，确定屈原为当年纪念的世界四大文化名人之一。
主要作品有《离骚》《九歌》《九章》《天问》等。他创作的《楚辞》是中国浪漫主义文学的源头，与《诗经》并称“风骚”，对后世诗歌产生了深远影响。
作品特点
战国时代，楚国之风俗迷信鬼神，宗教性的祭祀和祈祷在民间流行。屈原处于巫现甚盛的楚国，丰富的神话传说与原始的泛神论给他文学创作以充分地滋养，他在巫现甚盛的时代氛围中，展开自己的诗歌创作，《九歌》就是在这种时代氛围中所写的伟大光辉的诗篇。
《九歌》中十一篇祭祀十位神，这十位包括天神(东皇太一、云中君、大司命、少司命、东君)、地祇(湘君、湘夫人、河伯、山鬼)、人鬼（国殇）。就诗的内容说：
其一，既写了与人关系极为密切的神，如东君(太阳神)、云中君(云神)、大司命、少司命(寿夭之神)；又写了湘君、湘夫人之间美丽真挚的爱情传说，曲折地反映了表现手法说，或以庄重的笔调，写神灵的庄严伟大；或以婉曲细腻的笔调，写其复杂的感情;或以悲壮的笔调，写其为国捐躯的壮烈精神。他们无不神采飞动，栩栩如生。这些诗都是祭祀用的，神是由巫者扮演的。屈原以丰富的想象力，极生动地描写了神的活动以及祭祀的场面，写出了神的典型形象，并通过神反映了极为丰富的现实生活，充分表达了人间的希望与悲欢。它有着强烈地艺术魅力。
其二，屈原《九歌》中所写情节是由巫者表演展示的，由于情节较复杂生动，感情的描写颇为细腻，写出了较一丰满的人物形象。
其三，屈原是信神的，他把神的活动表现得淋漓尽致，生动传神，除了要表现真实的感情以外，从主观上讲，确有几分信仰者的虔诚。正因为屈原是信神的，他把神灵写得庄严、肃穆、和善。神是可以为人赐福的，神对人有着丰厚的感情。从神的外貌到心灵，都写得那么美。读了《九歌》，使人精神上产生愉悦之感。或者可以说，《九歌》旨在给损伤了心灵的读者精神以补偿，使之愉悦振奋。
屈原楚辞想象最为丰富，词采十分瑰丽。《离骚》中大量运用神话传说，把日月风云，都调集到诗篇中来，使辞彩非常绚灿，他还突出地描写了三次求女的故事，以表达自己执兼比兴”，他善于用美人、香草，以喻君子;恶木秽草，以喻小人。通过比兴手法把君王信谗、奸佞当道、爱国志士报国无门的情景，写得淋漓尽致。
