2、茗：据说是云南某地区的“茶”之土音，大约在东汉时始用来表示茶，现在与茶字基本通用，为茶之雅称。宋代苏轼有诗云：“从来佳茗似佳人。”香港陆羽茶室有名作家台静农题写的茶联：“泉烹苦茗琉璃碧，菊酿香醪琥珀黄。”

3、不夜侯：喝茶有醒脑提神，解除睡意之功，唐代白居易诗云：“破睡见茶功。”唐代曹邺诗云：“六脏睡神去，数朝诗思清。”晋代张华在《博物志》中说：“饮真茶令人少睡，故茶别称不夜侯，美其功也。”五代胡峤在饮茶诗中赞道：“破睡须封不夜侯。”

4、消毒臣：唐朝《中朝故事》记载，唐武宗时李德裕说天柱峰茶可以消酒肉毒，曾命人煮该茶一瓯，浇于肉食内，用银盒密封，过了一些时候打开，其肉已化为水，因而人们称茶为消毒臣。唐代曹邺饮茶诗云：“消毒岂称臣，德真功亦真。”

5、涤烦子：饮茶，可洗去心中的烦闷，历来备受赞咏。唐代《唐国史补》载：“常鲁公随使西番，烹茶帐中。赞普问：‘何物?’曰：‘涤烦疗渴，所谓茶也。’因呼茶为涤烦子。”唐代施肩吾诗云：“茶为涤烦子，酒为忘忧君。”明代潘允哲诗曰：“泠然一啜烦襟涤，欲御天风弄紫霞。”

唐代以前的古书中,茶的称呼有多种,有荼、荈、槚、蔎、诧、茗、葭、葭萌等,其中以茶字用得最多,但当时“荼”是一个多义字,“荼”有时是指苦菜,有时是指茶。后来,大概是为了区分苦菜和茶,将指茶的荼字加一个木字旁,因此就有了。在唐代以前茶和是茶的常用文字称呼,读音一般仍读茶（cha）音。有一个例子可以说明,湖南省有个茶陵县,是公元前202年汉高祖五年于古长沙国置的县称“荼陵县”（因产茶多而名之,“荼”字汉时就音茶）。“葭萌”也是古代茶的称呼，明代杨填《郡国外夷考》称“《汉志》：‘葭萌，蜀郡名’。萌，音“芒”。《方言》：‘蜀之谓茶曰葭萌，盖以茶氏郡也’。”可见，在茶陵县之前早已有以茶命名的县城---“葭萌县”。
茶文字的规范,自隋代的一本字典性质的书《广韵》开始,它同时收有茶、茶字,并说明“茶”是荼的俗称,因此唐代开元年间官修《开元文字音义》中就正式收入了茶字,专指茶树和茶叶,到陆羽写《茶经》时,就只用《茶》字,而不用荼了。
“茗”字在很多古书中,有的是指茶的嫩芽,有的把它指作晚采的茶,即“早采者称茶,晚采者称茗”。但现代语言中,往往将茗作为茶的雅称,似乎“品茗”比“饮茶”更雅致些。
