(1)颜色:真玛瑙石色泽鲜明光亮，假玛瑙石的色和光均差一些，二者对比较为明显。天然红玛瑙石颜色分明，条带十分明显，仔细观察，在红色条带处可见密集排列的细小红色斑点。用石料仿制的假玛瑙石烟壶，多数在底部呈花瓣形花纹，络成“菊花底”;而染色蓝玛瑙石颜色艳丽、均一，给人一种假的感觉。玛瑙石分为自然色和加工染色，自然色主要有红色、琥珀色和白色。市面上出售的蓝色、紫色的玛瑙石首饰不是本色，是经过加工后染上的，用几年后会出现退色。
(2)质地:假玛瑙石多为石料仿制，较真玛瑙石质地软，用玉在假玛瑙石上可划出痕迹，而真品则划不出。
(3)工艺质量:优质高玛瑙石的生产工艺严格且先进，故表面光亮度好，镶嵌牢固、周正，无划痕、裂纹。
(4)透明度:真玛瑙石透明度不如人工合成的好，稍有混沌，有的可看见自然水线或“云彩”，而人工合成的玛瑙石透明度好，象玻璃球一样透明。
(5)重量:真玛瑙石首饰比人工合成的玛瑙石首饰重一些。
(6)温度:真玛瑙石冬暖夏凉，而人工合玛瑙石随外界温度而变化，天热它也变热，天凉它也.
怎样鉴别真假玛瑙石:天然玛瑙石区别于假玛瑙石的最显著的标志，是其横断面有同心层纹结构，利用这个标志，整块玛瑙石较为容易识别，而经切割后的制成品，由于没有整齐明显的图案，则容易认错。
但一般来说，天然玛瑙石手感凉，表面像涂了一层蜡，并有蜡的光泽，半透明，硬度在摩氏7级，用小刀刻不动，由于它是在熔融状态下形成的结晶体，多为球状，所以特别致密;表面研磨后更为细腻，在硬杂木板上急骤磨擦十几下，玛瑙石不热，木板却发烫;颜色常是几种混杂于一块之中，形成美丽的花纹、层纹、锦花等绚丽多彩的图案。
假玛瑙石除人工合成外，一部分是用优质的石材来充当的。其基本特征是:手感固然凉，却没有蜡状感觉和光泽，有些硬度低，用小刀能刻出痕迹来;砸碎观察断面，除没有玛瑙石所具有的层纹外，颗粒较粗，甚至有裂隙;不透明，颜色之间界线分明。有些不法商贩在假冒玛瑙石的表面粘上一层薄薄的有机物，给人有蜡状光泽和手感的错觉，鉴别时要特别注意。相关链接:玛瑙石如何保养?
